WHAT YOU FOCUS ON IS WHAT YOU GET
What is Locus of Control?
A locus of control orientation is a belief about whether the outcomes of our actions are contingent on what we do (internal control orientation) or on events outside our personal control (external control orientation).
External Outlook
- I often feel that I have little control over my life and what happens to me.
- People rarely get what they deserve.
- It isn’t worth setting goals or making plans because too many things can happen that are outside of my control.
- Life is a game of chance.
- Individuals have little influence over the events of the world.
Internal Outlook
- If you work hard and commit yourself to a goal, you can achieve anything.
- There is no such thing as fate or destiny.
- If you study hard and are well-prepared, you can do well on exams.
- Luck has little to do with success; it’s mostly a matter of dedication and effort.
- In the long run, people tend to get what they deserve in life.
Listen to Your Language
External Locus of Control (Reactive)
- There is nothing I can do.
- That’s just the way I am.
- He makes me so mad.
- They won’t allow that.
- I have to do that.
- I can’t.
- I must.
- If only.
Internal Locus of Control (Proactive)
- Let’s look at our alternatives.
- I can choose a different approach.
- I control my own feelings.
- I can create an effective presentation.
- I will choose an appropriate response.
- I choose.
- I prefer.
- I will.
Why focus on increasing your Internal Locus of Control?
Research suggest that people who operate with an internal locus of control are more successful in both personal and profession settings - enjoying better health, relationships, and careers. They make better leaders and handle change more effectively than those with an external locus of control.
Benefits of Internal Locus of Control
- Internal Locus of Control are more likely to take responsibility for their actions
- Usually, have a strong sense of self-efficacy
- Tend to work hard to achieve the things they want
- Feel confidence in the face of challenges
- Tend to be physically healthier
- Are less stressed
- Report being happier and independent
- Often achieve greater success in the workplace
How do I increase my Internal Locus of Control?
- Be more self aware - reflect on your thoughts and actions.
- Change your thoughts.
- Watch your language and self-talk. - “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.” - Ford
- Choose your response.
- Believe your goals will be achieved through your actions.
- Take ownership and responsibility.
- See failure as learning.
- Reflect on your strengths and areas for improvement.
General Reminders
- Each grade level will meet with McNeill next week to review Intervention Plans. Each teacher should bring the MAP (K-5) and STAAR (4th-5th) data needed for planning groups along with a charged device and paper/pencil.
- Our Campus Advisory Council Meeting originally scheduled for Monday has been rescheduled. The meeting will be held the next day on Tuesday, September 26th at 4 p.m. in the library.
- Our next RDR date is Tuesday, September 26th. Only students with signed permission slips from parents turned in by noon on Monday will be permitted to stay after school and participate. Please be sure to send library books with students who are staying. As they eat their snack, that is the "Read" portion of Read/Deed/Run. If you'd like to assist with supervision until 4:15 p.m., there is a sign-up sheet on the back of the lounge door.
- On Friday, September 29th, Lindsey has coordinated a visit from Folklorico Dancers in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month for our students. CIS Counseling Groups Begin Next Week!
Beginning Monday, our CIS Counselor, Lindsey Johnican will begin small group counseling for 1st - 5th grade students. Today, Lindsey will email grade levels individually with the names of the students in each of their groups. She has already made parent contact and received permission for each student to participate. In 1st and 3rd grade, Lindsey will pick up the students from your classroom, escort them to her room for their small group time, and she will escort them back to class when the session is over. For the 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade lunch groups, Lindsey will pick up the students from the cafeteria. They will take their lunch with them and eat with her in the classroom during their small group time. Lindsey will escort these students back to the cafeteria when their session is over.
