Enrich, Extend, Excite!
October 2020 ELP Newsletter
What's Been Happening in the Month of October?
Beginning October 26th - November 13th, all third graders will take the CogAT screener. This is a shortened screener version of the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to provide universal information for future ELP services and to give instructional staff more information about students’ abilities. No preparation or studying is necessary. This is an electronic test that students will take on computers.
If your child is in the hybrid model, the test will be given in their classroom. Their classroom teacher and the ELP teacher will be present to oversee the process. Students will complete a brief practice session to make sure they are comfortable using the computer. The testing session will last around an hour and will include rest breaks between sections if needed. If your child is in the online model, you should have received a Sign-Up Genius email from Mrs. Bradford, the ELP teacher at Mann, to sign up for a time to have your student screened. The Health and Safety Guidelines will be followed to make this a safe situation for your child. If you choose not to have your child come into school at this time, you can nominate your child in the spring to take the full CogAT. Please let your building ELP teacher know if you will be choosing to wait until spring. After the test, a report with your child’s scores will be sent to you. Some students may later take the full Cognitive Abilities Test to gather more information about their abilities. That information, along with classroom performance and teacher information will be used to determine eligibility for ELP services in higher grades. You will be kept informed throughout this process. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. More information about ELP services is available on the school district’s website: http://www.iowacityschools.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=293
Sincerely,
Mrs. Diane Bradford

Design thinking is the iterative process of solving problems that are grounded in empathy for key stakeholders.
Students will be learning how to use the Design Thinking Process to empathize, define problems, ideate, create prototypes, test, and take their ideas through a "Shark Tank-like" situation."
