Unit question: What influences relationships?
In this unit, we will learn to:
Summarize texts, from many different genres, to determine a theme or central idea and explain how it is supported by key details.
Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, and events, drawing on specific details in the text.
Make informed judgments about quality of text; make connections to other texts, ideas, cultural perspectives, identities, eras, and personal experiences.
We have had so much fun talking and writing about the characters, the events and the theme of the books in this unit. The students are excited about these realistic fiction books we are reading. They are engaged and participating in whole group discussion while analyzing the text and the authors words. They are finishing up literary essays and essays that compare and contrast two of the four books from the unit. What hard, productive work!! I am proud of the kiddos.
Fifth Grade Math Workshop
The fifth graders have started Unit 7 - Classifying Figures.
Essential Question:
- How do objects and their attributes relate to each other?
Enduring Understanding:
- Mathematicians understand that attributes provide information about an object's classification.
The targets for this short unit are the following:
I can understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category.
- I can classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.
Science
Fifth Grade has started the Unit: Earth’s Place In The Universe
The core ideas are the following:
The Universe and its Stars:
The sun is a star that appears larger and brighter than other stars because it is closer. Stars range greatly in their distance from Earth.
Earth and the Solar System
The orbits of Earth around the sun and of the moon around Earth, together with the rotation of Earth about an axis between its North and South poles, cause observable patterns.
These include day and night; daily changes in the length and direction of shadows; and different positions of the sun, moon, and stars at different times of the day, month, and year.
Types of Interactions
The gravitational force of Earth acting on an object near Earth’s surface pulls that object toward the planet’s center.
School Counselor, Mrs. Edwards
his month during classroom guidance lessons, students worked on calming strategies and mindfulness. Students learned different breathing techniques and calming strategies that can be implemented when experiencing something difficult. Mindfulness techniques of tapping into our senses as a biological way of calming down were utilized as well. The school counselor provides an activity done in class to further learning. Ask your student about this activity and the things they’ve learned from it.
