Mayfield Messenger
Week 30 Edition/March 10, 2023
Message from Dr. Frischkorn
Good Evening Mayfield Intermediate School students and families!
We are inching closer to the final quarter of the school year. Next week your child will be finishing up the 3rd quarter of the school year. It's amazing to look back and reflect on how much our students have grown academically, socially, and emotionally over the past three quarters. We want to finish the school year strong and continue to prepare for the SOL exams that we will be taking in May.
The SOL assessments are a valuable tool that educators can use to determine if our students are making the appropriate growth and staying on track to graduate from Osbourn High School. It is important that students are well prepared for these assessments and that they put forth their best effort. Our students are fortunate to have amazing teachers here to support them. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions.
SOL Dates:
5th & 6th Grade Reading: Tuesday, May 9th
5th & 6th Grade Math: Tuesday, May 16th
5th Grade Science: Thursday, May 18th
Always Learning,
Dr. Donald Frischkorn

Love Your Laptop
Our students have done a great job caring for their laptops throughout the school year. Our 5th-grade students were provided a new Chromebook at the beginning of the year, and our 6th-grade students use the laptops from last year.
One area that we do need to focus on is the few students who are causing intentional damage to their laptops. Missing computer keys from the keyboard and cracked computer screens are the two most common items that are intentionally damaged. We will be reaching out to families and letting them know that they will be charged for any damage to a computer that is deemed intentional by our technology specialist and/or school administration.
The Manassas City Police Department and Manassas City Public Schools will turn their attention toward Substance Abuse Awareness and Prevention during the next Parent E3 Series. FBI Special Agent Shane Dana will give attendees an in-depth presentation on opioids, trends and current threats, and prevention strategies. Special Agent Dana will then sit on a panel with DEA Field Intelligence Manager, Jennifer Lofland, one of MCPD’s VICE Narcotics Detectives, and several other experts to answer questions from the public.
The Parent E3 Series: Substance Abuse Awareness and Prevention will take place on March 22, 2023 at Osbourn High School (1977 Eagle Way), starting at 5:30 pm.
Dinner will be provided. All are welcome to attend.
Parent E3 is a Community Awareness & Prevention Series hosted by Manassas City Police Department in partnership with Manassas City Public Schools, regional law enforcement partners, and subject matter experts. This series will Engage, Educate, and Empower parents and caregivers to address at-risk behaviors in our youth population.

Career Day is Coming April 14
Dear Mayfield Family and Community Members,
February 22, 2023
Mayfield Intermediate School will be holding a Career Day for our students on Friday, April 14th. Career Day is a fun-filled day where students will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers. They will meet members of our community and engage in activities designed to increase their awareness of the world of work.
We are currently in need of community members willing to share their careers with us. Our career day will resemble a college fair and all of our speakers will have their own booth used to showcase their career and talents. We ask that you arrive by 11:15 am in order to set up. The fair will begin at 11:30 am and conclude at 1:45 pm. Guest speakers will talk to students about what they do at work, what they like about their job, what type of training/education is needed, and how basic skills/subjects that the children are learning now can help them in this job. Please feel free to bring handouts, props and visual aids (stickers, trinkets, business cards, magnets, etc.). In return, you will receive many smiles and priceless questions.
We hope that you will consider participating in our Career Day activity. If you are available, please fill out the following link: www.tinyurl.com/MISCareerDay2023. The link can also be found on Mayfield’s homepage. Please RSVP no later than March 17th. Questions can be e-mailed to Liz Thomasson at ethomasson@mcpsva.org, or call 571-377-6617. Thank you so much for your time and consideration. We hope that you are able to join us for this special event!
