The Leighton News
December 10, 2021
From the Principal
Dear Leighton Families,
What a great week it has been as we gear up for the excitement and holiday spirit starting next week. Please see below for our Holiday Spirit Week festivities starting next week December 13th and running through December 21st! We are looking forward to celebrating all of our student's successes both academically and behaviorally with our quarterly PBIS Building Wide Movie Event on December 21st as well.
Tis the season for Holiday Shop, Spirit Week, Movie Events, Holiday Concerts, and classroom parties. During these fun-filled weeks, the students have also been hard at work wrapping up the second quarter with presentations, projects, peer review writing assignments, summatives, and collaborative learning endeavors. It is always the highlight of my days to spend these times with our students in their classrooms watching them flourish, grow, goal set, and achieve! I couldn't be more proud of our staff and students and all their hard work this year to continually develop the whole child!
Our Aurora For Others Fundraiser was a huge success this past week. Thank you to all of our families for sending in money to support our Money Wars. All 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade jars will be collected today to conclude the event and the top contributor will be notified and take part in sharing this donation with a local charity!
For our Third Grade families, please be on the lookout for your child's Third Grade score reports and parent letters in regards to the Fall AIR State Tests. We are waiting to receive them from the State and they are expected shortly.
As we begin to close the second quarter it is absolutely amazing to see and celebrate the growth of each of our students. Thank you for your continued support, partnership, and teamwork at every turn. Please know how much we value each of you and all you do to help us create the best possible learning environments for our students. We truly feel very blessed to work with such a wonderful and supportive educational community.
Kind Regards,
Michelle Nizen, Building Principal

Lastly, we are excited about our PBIS or Positive Behavior Intervention Supports Programming and the engaging, safe, and supportive learning environments it fosters. Part of the program's effectiveness is looking at feedback from all stakeholders including students, staff, and parents. Please take a moment to complete our PBIS family survey linked here to help us continue to enhance our PBIS program. We always look forward to your feedback!
ALICE Drill
The safety of the children, staff, and guests at Leighton Elementary School is very important to us. To maintain a safe environment for our children to learn and grow, it is necessary that we practice our emergency and crisis response plans throughout the school year by having drills designed to exercise our procedures. Each year we conduct fire drills, tornado drills, and ALICE drills.
Next week on Thursday, December 16th, we will be conducting an Alice Drill where staff will be talking about ALICE which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate, and reminding students what to do in the event an intruder was in the building. These are all developmentally appropriate conversations to remind students of our safety procedures and protocols. For this ALICE drill, a scenario will be given and students will practice the parts of the ALICE safety procedure. We work with our local law enforcement during these drills. We wanted to share this communication in the event students may be discussing the Alice Drill occurring next Thursday at home.

Clinic Updates
As a reminder, please monitor your child for any COVID-related symptoms and contact our school nurse if you have any questions. We appreciate your attention to this.
- Check your child each day for COVID-related symptoms. If your child is showing any symptoms whatsoever, it is best to keep him/her home to monitor.
- Students sent home with a fever, may not return to school until they are fever-free without medication for at least 24 hours. This means if your child was sent home on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. with a fever, he/she may not return to school until Thursday. If your child does return the next day, our school nurse will be calling for you to come to pick him/her up. Thank you for your support and efforts in this area.
- We have COVID-19 home testing kits available that we can send home with any child or family should you question symptoms or exposure. We will be able to answer any questions about these kits should the need arise.
- Please make sure your Final Forms medical information is up to date. We will closely read the health sections to address any medical concerns.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Tanski in the clinic at 330-954-2285 or email her at atanski@aurora-schools.org
**** If your child will be absent for an extended period, please reach out to your child's teacher and they will get school work ready for your student for the period of the absence. You may pick up the work outside the main office on a table that will be labeled with your student's name. We are a google district and utilize google classroom in our 3-5 classes. Please check in with your child's teacher about any google classroom posting and/or assignments in his/her absence.
