Reminder: Project Management: Essential Skills for Success | Session 2, January 24
You already possess much of the skills and experience to be successful in a project management role in business. The purpose of this two-session workshop is to reinforce further your knowledge and ability to translate and transition those skills by providing you with terminology and techniques that will connect your postdoctoral academic background to the industry.
For those of you who registered and participated in our Project Management Workshop |Session 1 (Project Definition and Project Planning), this is a reminder that Session 2 will take place on January 24.
Session 2 will cover the topics of project execution and project closure with an emphasis on the differences and similarities of doing project management in an academic setting versus an industry setting.

2018 NPA Annual Conference | Registration Now
The NPA Annual Conference is the largest national conference and networking event dedicated to the postdoctoral community. Conference attendees - postdoctoral scholars, administrators, faculty, and representatives from disciplinary societies, industry, and corporations - are provided with the opportunity to gather and enhance their professional development and leadership skills.
Lydia Villa-Komaroff, Ph.D., has been confirmed as keynote speaker at the conference. Villa-Komaroff, a molecular biologist, executive, and diversity advocate, is a consultant and speaker, and founder of Intersections, SBD. She is a founding member of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/ Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), having served as a board member and vice president in the past, and currently serving as a member of the Committee of Senior Advisors. Alison Gammie, Ph.D., and Rafael Luna, Ph.D., have been confirmed as plenary speakers.Alison Gammie, Ph.D., is the director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) Division of Training, Workforce Development, and Diversity (TWD).
As the executive director of the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) and the principal investigator (PI) of the Administrative Core of NRMN located at Boston College, Rafael E. Luna, Ph.D., utilizes data analytics to strategically grow NRMN and effectively reach all 50 states, including Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico.
The 2018 NPA Annual Conference will take place April 6 - 8, 2018, at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel in Cleveland, OH. Case Western Reserve University will serve as host. Early bird registration for the conference will open Monday, November 20 and end on Friday, January 5, 2018. Register early to take advantage of the discounted rate.

Welcome & Information Session
The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs offers Welcome and Information Sessions to help orient new and current postdocs. If you are a postdoc who is new to Rutgers, or just curious about the resources that are available to you, we strongly encourage you to register for an upcoming one-hour session.

School of Graduate Studies Ethical Scientific Conduct courses | Spring 2018
Dear 1st and 5th year grad students and postdocs,
This is a reminder that SGS offers courses in Ethical Scientific Conduct which fulfill Responsible Conduct of Research requirements and are compliant with NIH guidelines. Please see below for those required to take these classes.
1st year PhD, MD/PhD and MS students doing a thesis are required to take Ethical Scientific Conduct Initial training course (16:115:556). This course will meet on Mondays from 4-5pm throughout the semester.
5th year PhD and 3rd year of PhD phase for MD/PhD must register for Ethical Scientific Conduct Refresher training course (16:115:558). This course will meet for all 4 Tuesdays in February from 3-5pm each week.
Postdocs in the biomedical sciences should take Responsible Conduct of Research training ONCE while a postdoc since it is required by the NIH every 4 years and at least once per career phase. Postdocs who never had ethics training when they were a graduate students should ideally take the initial training (16:115:556). Those who have had training as a graduate student should take the refresher (16:115:558). Postdocs can locate the appropriate paper forms to register on our Ethics website.

AAAS Mass Media Fellowship Deadline to Apply, January 15
The AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship places science, engineering, and mathematics students and postdocs at media organizations nationwide. They have worked as reporters, editors, researchers, and production assistants at media outlets that include the Los Angeles Times, WIRED, National Public Radio, National Geographic, and Scientific American.
The Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows use their academic training in the sciences as they research, write and report today’s headlines, while sharpening their abilities to communicate complex scientific issues to the public. The Fellowship experience broadens the participant’s career path while increasing the public’s understanding of science and technology. Spanish Language Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship AAAS serves the growing Latino populations of the US by supporting science communication and education in the language of their communities. The recruitment of Spanish Language Mass Media Fellows helps bring science news to the mainstream Spanish news outlets to share with Spanish speaking communities. AAAS is excited to be continuing the program for the 2018 Fellowship year.
Burroughs Wellcome Fund Accepting Applications for Postdoctoral Enrichment Program Deadline: January 16, 2018
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is accepting applications for its 2018 Postdoctoral Enrichment Program.
The annual program awards grants of up to $60,000 over three years to support career-development activities for underrepresented minority postdoctoral fellows in a degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada whose training and professional development are guided by mentors committed to helping the fellow advance into a career in biomedical or medical research.
Up to twelve grants will be awarded for enrichment activities annually. Grants are meant to supplement the training of postdocs whose research activities are already supported by other sources.
To be eligible, applicants must
- have no more than thirty-six months of postdoctoral research experience (in a research laboratory) at the time of application and not be more than five years from his/her PhD;
- be nominated by a qualified mentor at the degree-granting institution where the applicant will conduct his/her postdoctoral/fellowship training;
- have secured a postdoctoral position with funding (including support from the mentor's existing research grants) at a degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada;
- be a member of a minority group underrepresented in biomedical research (i.e., American Indian or Alaska Native, black or African American, Hispanic, or Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander).
BRAIN Initiative Fellows: Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship (F32) Deadline: March 15, 2018
The purpose of this National Institutes of Health program is to support promising applicants during their mentored postdoctoral training under the guidance of outstanding faculty sponsors. Applicants for the BRAIN Initiative Fellows F32 program are expected to propose a research project and training plan in a scientific area relevant to one or more of the goals of the BRAIN Initiative, (see http://braininitiative.nih.gov). The integrated program of research and training is expected to provide applicants with training using cutting-edge tools, theories and/or approaches that will prepare them to launch independent research careers in areas that will advance the goals of the BRAIN Initiative.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with NIH scientific/research staff when planning an application. Early contact provides an opportunity for NIH scientific/research staff to provide guidance on program scope and appropriateness of the proposed research and training for potential funding in response to this FOA. Applicants should contact NIH scientific/research staff as early as possible before the due date.
The award provide stipends, partial tuition, expenses and travel to meetings.
