Canham and Franke Updates

Mrs. Franke and Mrs. Canham's 5th Grade Class

May 2017

Throughout the school year, our two classes have combined multiple times in all different content areas. This last month of school, we will do this on a more regular basis in order to provide collaboration between students in both classes. We are very fortunate to have two amazing classes in which all students respect one another, which makes combining our classes even more fun and engaging for all!

What's Happening in 5th grade?

Academics

Reader's Workshop

We will be starting new book clubs at the end of this week. Each time your child has a book club meeting, they need to have their assigned reading completed, and at least 8 sticky notes to mark their thinking for conversations starters. The day after the meeting they need to have a write long completed. Here is a link to the expectations and the group calendar can be found in your child's homework folder.

The students are also learning about different propaganda techniques in order to understand bias in the author's message.

Writer's Workshop

5th graders are continuing to work on their research papers. All of the students should have their resources and start to take notes this week. They will get class time to work on this, but will also need to work on this at home as well. Next week, we will be working on our rough drafts. Here is the student's research timeline.

Math

We have started a unit on growth patterns. We are working on creating and using tables and graphs to represent growth patterns and creating algebraic equations to represent the growth pattern. When we finish, we will be working on describing, summarizing, comparing and representing data.

Social Studies

These last 2 weeks of social studies, we will focus on national government. Groups of students will be assigned to different branches of the government. Groups will then create an interactive lesson to share with other classmates about what they learned!

Science (starts approx. May 12)

The students will be starting their unit on roller coaster physics. Throughout this unit, the students will be learning about forces and Newton's laws of motion. The homework for this unit will be online through Discovery Education. This online homework, videos and reading, will allow us to do a lot of hands-on activities in class, and in the end - create a marble roller coaster!
