Merrell's Message
Dear HAWK Families,
Thank you to all of our families who came out on Friday to our Movie Night. Our PTA provided a great opportunity for families to hang out, eat some popcorn and snacks, and share laughter with a good movie. Our PTA is pretty fabulous!!
I know I have said this before but . . We have an incredible group of parents here at The Grove. We are thankful for your support. This week's Teacher Appreciation has been so wonderful. Our staff has been spoiled by your generosity. We thank you for noticing the hard work all of our staff do on a daily basis for the benefit of our kids.
As we look to the final three weeks of school, we have a few more opportunities coming up. We will participate in a fun Career Vehicle Day on May 16th. Our 5th and 6th graders will be celebrated on May 18th. May 19th will be our Field Day!
It is going to be a great May!!
We are HAWKstrong!!

SUMMER BAG OF BOOKS
Your Hazel Grove Hawk has the opportunity to check out 5 books of their choice to take home to use for summer reading! See the form attached for details. Let's keep our Hawks reading this summer to avoid the "summer slide" in achievement for next year!

May: Wellness over the Summer and Community Resources
Mindfulness is defined as, “the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us” according to mindful.org. By engaging in Mindfulness practices, “we reduce stress, enhance performance, gain insight and awareness through observing our own mind, and increase our attention to others’ well-being.” Mindfulness is not only a meditation or therapeutic practice, it can transform into a lifestyle by bringing awareness into our activities.
The next time you eat a popsicle on a hot day, challenge your kids to be silent until their popsicle is entirely gone. Try this with them and show them you can practice mindfulness activities as well. What flavors do you both notice? Does the popsicle start to feel different in your mouth as it starts melting? What temperature changes do you notice? Was it hard to stay quiet the whole time? There are lots of things you could talk about when you finish the challenge.
Another fun idea to do together is to put a blanket down on the lawn and spend some time staring at the clouds. What shapes do you see? Animals? People? Spend at least 10-15 minutes studying the sky—and notice how the clouds gently move along. Notice how the cloud that first looked like a pig now looks like a cat. This is a great way to introduce the idea that our minds are kind of like the sky—thoughts float through on their own, and they change on their own. We can watch our thoughts in our minds like we watch the clouds.
Here are some mindful activities we hope you can take a few minutes and enjoy with your kiddos this spring and summer.
