Reflections and Looking Ahead
We had another busy week this week with our Read Across America week and curriculum night. Thank you for planning rigorous tasks for our students to complete this week as we focused on the joys of reading. This week we will see warm temperatures and then by the end of the week it will cool off. Are you noticing that your lessons/students are like the weather? Some days you and your students are hot and then you have cold days? Continue to stay the course!
We had lots of sickness this week with students and staff so I encourage you to have your students wash their hands or use hand sanitizer. It continues to take a village to keep all of us safe and healthy.
Updates and reminders
- When a parent contacts you about their child being absent, you must let the office know. Office calls on a daily basis about student attendance. When attendance e-mail is sent each afternoon, from Mrs. Anderson, you must look and see if the code of 2A is beside of your student or a 1A if they are sick and you've received a message.
- Remediation will begin for 3rd-5th grade on Monday, March 27th. All remediation forms & names need to be due by Monday, March 20th.
- Please turn in all forms to Mrs. Ferrell so she can make the bus route and have the sheets if anything comes up.
- Every-time you leave your classroom, remember to take your grade level walkie.
- Pierce Group Benefits will present to staff on Tuesday, March 21st during our faculty meeting.
- Stop the Bleed training will be held on Monday, March 20th. This is an optional training but very beneficial.
Curriculum Corner 👩🏫
Why not to rely on math key words!
"Children who have been taught the keyword strategy usually don't study a problem. They don't think about the problem's meaning or what is happening or how they could figure it out in the real world. Instead of developing a variety of strategies, a lot of students just scan through the problem, searching for those all-important common words, until they strike gold. Then they use whatever mathematical operations "go with" that keyword... even if it doesn't make sense."
- Easy! 12+7=19 green apples. Maybe it does work...
How about this one... John bought 7 cartons of eggs. Each carton contains 12 eggs. How many eggs did he buy in all? Umm, 7+12=19 eggs?
75 people visited the museum on Sunday. Twice as many visited on Saturday. How many people visited the museum in all? Oh no, what do I add? There's only one number!
Surely keywords will work for subtraction word problems, right? Let's give it a go...
The third grade is going on a field trip. 44 students fill up the first bus. How many more buses are needed for the other 70 students? Hmm... 70 - 44 = 26 buses. That seems like an awful lot of buses!
Sam went to a movie that started at 2:45 and ends at 4:10. It is now 3:30. How many more minutes are left before the movie is over? Uhhhhh....
These are just a few examples of why keywords often don't work for solving different types of word problems.
