HSEF Turnover Hunger
What is Turnover Hunger?
The Hamilton Southeastern Education Foundation is asking all 22 HSE schools to help fill the shelves of FYAP and local food pantries with targeted food donations by students and staff. Between September 7-10, we are asking the following breakfast, snack and dinner items to be brought in by building
type:
- Elementary Schools - oatmeal or mac & cheese cups
- Intermediate and Junior Highs - granola bars, peanut butter crackers, or cheese crackers
- High Schools - pasta
Every food donation is much appreciated, but we understand some would prefer to make
monetary donations. For those interested in donating directly to the fund, they can visit:
www.hsefoundation.org/foodforthought
Why is Turnover Hunger important?
It is estimated that 1 in 7 HSE students struggle with hunger. Turnover Hunger raises awareness for the 3,000 local children struggling with food insecurity. Donations will assist FYAP in meeting HSE student needs and assist local food banks.
Upcoming ALICE Drill at BSE
As we navigate the school year, we periodically practice safety drills at BSE. By State law we are required to complete fire, tornado, and man-made drills during the year. The safety of our students and staff is of utmost importance and we will use the drills as teaching opportunities for your children.
Considering the world in which we live, it is best practice for us to have safety discussions and drill at developmentally appropriate levels. That means the discussion we have with kindergarten students is a bit different than what we have in 4th grade and what the high schools may have with their students. Teachers are trained to adjust discussion, give basics but not scare, and respond accordingly in crisis. The best advice you can give your children when under the care of school officials is to be as quiet as possible and listen to adults in charge for directions. Unfortunately, we can’t completely prevent children from hearing the negatives that occur in our world, but we can prepare them to the degree that is developmentally appropriate.
HSE uses ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, or Evacuate) as our protocol for any lockdown and we use the book I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared to support our discussion with our students. Students will have a discussion with their teachers during the week of October 13. On Thursday, September 16, we plan to conduct our first lockdown (ALICE) drill this school year. We will utilize the P.A. system in the building to initiate the drill and all staff and students are told it is a drill and not an emergency. We practice what to do in the classroom to stay safe. Our students have been trained to shelter in place when a fire alarm occurs, so they already know to stop and listen for further directions from adults. I will share that your children have been great with our first fire drill this year. I am very proud of our students and staff!
Some additional tips we have shared with your children are to not open doors for strangers and if they see something unusual then report it to an adult immediately.
We appreciate you partnering with us and having follow-up conversations at home about safety. We want to assure your children feel safe and secure within our schools. Being prepared to a developmentally appropriate level is important and please know that we do scale our discussion based on their questions and age.
