Penngrove Press
May 6, 2022
Dear Penngrove Families,
Happy May! And boy we're off to a wild start, aren't we? Just earlier this week I remember thinking, "Wait, it's May 2nd already?!" And now my thoughts have turned to, "Oh my goodness next week is mid-May!" I've had a blast this week driving back and forth between campus and 6th grade camp. What an experience our 6th graders have had at Camp Royaneh. We missed them!
Yesterday was one of my favorite holidays (because guacamole) so since we didn't get to celebrate together, I'm inviting you all to Fiesta Familiar on May 31st! You MUST RSVP for this event to attend. Details can be found below. Thanks to our awesome PTA for hosting yet another Family Fun Night for our community!
This may not be on your radar since it's been a couple of years, but Open House is NEXT WEEK! We can't wait to welcome you on campus to see what we've been up to. Be sure to stop by special places like the library and the garden! If you plan to indulge in our delicious pasta feed, you must RSVP. Treat yourself to a night of no cooking and support our Class of 2023!
As we shift into the final month or so of school, I have a few reminders and requests.
#1 Don't slack off! Now more than ever, we need everyone to push us through this final month. Have you let your evening routine go by the wayside with baseball or gymnastics? It's time to refocus and make sure you're reading with your #pennpanther nightly for at least 20 minutes. Have a big kid? Have them read you a chapter book while you're making dinner. Or, pair up siblings. We need our students reading nightly!
#2 Keep adult things adult. Your children sense the transition to summer and the next grade level ahead. Change can often lead to feelings of nervousness, anxiety, excitement, happiness, or hesitation. It's important we remember and acknowledge all that our children have been through over the past couple of years. At Penngrove this year, we have placed a huge emphasis on helping our students successfully navigate the school day which includes what to do when you run into a challenge academically or socially. My point here is: our kids have enough going on in their own little worlds, let's keep adult things adult. You do your children a big favor when you shield them from the stresses of the world. They will have a lifetime to explore those!
#3 Plan something fun to look forward to! Doesn't it feel great to have something to look forward to? It doesn't need to be grand, just something simple. A morning walk at the beach or a visit to a new hiking trail. Don't like the outdoors? Try a new restaurant or visit a local museum. What about roller skating?!
#4 COVID Check. I totally get it. We are really tired of this topic. I do want to remind everyone that we have SO many fun things planned for May/June. It's heartbreaking any time a student has to miss out on all the fun due to a positive test, an illness, etc. Please keep a CLOSE EYE on symptoms and when in doubt, test or stay home until you've had time to assess. Your students are looking forward to so much, we'd love them to participate in everything!
#5 Give hugs, play, be silly, and remind your amazing kids just how special they are just for being who they are!
Have a lovely weekend, #pennvillage!

GARDEN UPDATE
This month we are studying Ladybugs, or as we have been calling them Lady beetles! We are participating in the Lost Ladybug Project which is out of Cornell University. We are practicing being citizen scientists and sharing our lady beetle data with real scientists who are studying ladybug populations to learn why native populations have been becoming increasingly rare and how we can better support this very important predator insect.
Also, we will have a pop-up plant sale in the parking lot on Friday at pick-up time. Plants will be for sale by donation and all proceeds BENEFIT our Garden Program. We will have Petaluma Gold Rush bean plants, kale, basil, AND MORE! so get a spot ready in your garden!
Please come and join us over the summer for three garden work days!! We will be doing a major overhaul on Monday, June 20th, Saturday, June 25th, and Wednesday, July 13th, from 10-3 and need your help. Come for part of the time or all day and lend a hand. This opportunity to upgrade our teaching garden is made possible by the Penngrove PTA and our community partners Grab N’ Grow and Harmony Farm supply. We will be creating a TK/K teaching garden and upgrading infrastructure for the whole student body. Bring your power tools and come be a part of this awesome opportunity to make our teaching garden better than ever.
The deadline for our Flower Power bulb fundraiser has been extended until May 25th. Check it out! We get 50% of your purchase price donated to the Garden Program and you can beautify your space and support pollinators!
Ms. Ortiz
