NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
Term 3 Week 7 : 3 September 2020
Dear Parents and Staff
What a week this has been, particularly for our Year Six children. The week started calmly, but with the Confirmation Retreat yesterday, the Senior Field Events Carnival today and Mercy Day tomorrow, it is certainly ending with a bang. On top of this, I have learnt today that we will very likely be able to move forward with the Year Six children receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on 7 November at 4.00pm. Somewhere in amongst all of this we shouldn’t lose sight of Fathers’ Day this coming Sunday. Whilst Mothers’ Day was a little restrained this year due to the COVID restrictions perhaps we could take the time to think of, and thank, both mums and dads for everything that they do for us.
MERCY DAY
The staff have prepared a great day of learning and fun for the children tomorrow. As was printed in last week’s newsletter, the children will be invited to:
- Wear free dress.
- Have an icy pole treat for morning tea.
- Have a sausage sizzle and a juice box for lunch
- Participate in a Liturgy of the Word in their Year level.
- Participate in a range of activities within their class about Catherine McAuley, the Mercy Order and our school traditions.
- Participate in a mini fete involving a range of games and activities.
- Enjoy time in the afternoon in a sharing activity with their buddy class.
- Children are asked to bring a $5.00 donation which will cover all activities for the day. This will be passed on to the Sisters to assist with their Mercy Works for the needy.
FATHERS’ DAY
I’ve recently been treated to seeing the wonderful range of gifts that the children, under their teachers’ direction, have produced for their fathers. I hope all dads (and mums) have a relaxing day on Sunday enjoying the many freedoms that living in this great state of Western Australia have afforded us.
ANGELICO ART EXHIBITION
As I advised in last week’s newsletter, some of our students had their artwork entered in the Catholic Schools Angelico Art Exhibition this year. The Virtual Tour of the Exhibition is now available for viewing as per the item below. Follow the link to the Catholic Arts webpage where you will be able to view a short “taster” of the Exhibition and the full Virtual Tour (click on the orange box).
FIELD EVENTS CARNIVAL (YEARS 3-6)
When I visited the Carnival at Ern Clark Athletics Centre this morning, the children were fully immersed into their many Field Events. I have no idea which Faction was winning the Carnival, but I could see that the children were certainly all giving their best effort for their team. I am so proud of, and constantly amazed by, the children’s efforts and dedication to supporting each other. I look forward to learning all of the results when the children return.
THANK YOU TO MUMS, DADS & GRANDPARENTS
In last week’s newsletter I advised that, in lieu of the breakfasts and morning teas that we hold each year to thank our mums, dads and grandparents, we will have free hamburgers for all of them at the Senior Athletics Carnival in the first week of next Term on Thursday, 15 October. What I neglected to consider in this gesture was the parents of the younger children so, next Thursday, at the Junior Athletics Carnival which will be held in the school grounds, we will also have free burgers for those adults who attend. If you attend both Carnivals, you will be able to have two delicious burgers. Now, that’s what I call an incentive!

YEAR 5 CLASS NEWS
We are really rocking in Year Five and there isn’t a minute spare in our days, we are so busy learning.
ART
We have been lucky enough to have the incredible Mrs Flexman teaching us Art for the first half of the Term and have been learning all about rotational symmetry and screen printing. Who knew there was mathematics in art?! Check out some of our incredible creations!
SUSTAINABILITY
We care a whole lot about the environment in Year Five and we call ourselves the Waste Wise Warriors. Twice a week, we collect the Crunch & Sip scraps from each classroom to feed to our worms. Yes, you read that right. We have a worm farm! It is behind the library in our garden area. All classes are welcome to visit the garden and see the worm farm in action.
EXCURSION
We continue to educate ourselves about the world’s waste problem and this week we took our learning up the hill to Red Hill Waste Management Facility. We had a totally rubbish, oops sorry, amazing day and got to see what happens to our waste once it is collected in our bins each week. We learnt all about recycling and how to live more sustainably and even participated in educational activities including feeding and holding worms and sorting waste.
Thanks to all the amazing parent helpers who came along and made the day such a wonderful success. We finished off a fantastic day of learning with a play at Woodbridge Play Space. Check out some photos of the students - and teachers!
Keep a look out for the Year Five Waste Wise Warriors around the school. We are in training to fight the world’s waste problem.
NIGHT OF THE NOTABLES
The Year Fives are getting excited for Night of the Notables which will take place on Wednesday in Week 9. Each student has chosen a noteworthy, or remarkable person to research and they will present a two minute speech about the life of their notable. If you see them around the school please ask them who they have chosen to research!

EARLY YEARS LEARNING FRAMEWORK
Belonging, Being and Becoming – the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) describes the principles, practises and outcomes that support and enhance young children’s learning from birth to five years of age, as well as their transition to school.
The framework is a key component of the National Quality Framework for early childhood education and care. The EYLF was developed by the Australian and state and territory governments with input from the early childhood sector and early childhood academics.
The framework offers a vision where 'all children experience learning that is engaging and builds success for life'.
(Sourced from https://www.education.gov.au/early-years-learning-framework-0 )
Each week we will feature one of these principles, practises or outcomes in the newsletter.
We have looked at ‘Belonging’, ‘Learning is Everywhere’ and ‘Becoming’.
This week let’s look at ‘Being’.
