MakerSpace in the WC Library

What is a Makerspace?

Our WC library is in the beginning stages of adding a Makerspace, so we wanted to give you some background about the "maker movement," and invite you to be in it from the very beginning.

In his book, Makerspaces, John J. Burke defines a makerspace as:

"... an area in a library where users can use tools and equipment to design, build, and create all sorts of different things. It may be a dedicated room or a multipurpose space in which a collection of raw materials and resources can be utilized as desired. Projects range from prototyping product designs with 3D printers, to programming robots, to creating art out of recycled items."

We would add that it is also a place to collaborate and share ideas while creating.

As we continue to envision our Makerspace as a place devoted to tinkering, playing, and experimenting with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) activities, we welcome any contributions you would like to share. Your time, talents, or treasures will help this become a successful place for students, faculty, and community to come together to create, explore, and share.
