April Portrait of a Graduate

Beginning this year, North Kansas City schools are implementing Portrait of a Graduate initiative. This program is designed to teach students different life skills that they can use to be successful. This month’s skill focuses on integrity. Students will be able to identify their life values, connect their behavior to their values, and understand how their actions impact themselves and others. Nashua will encourage integrity by teaching classroom lessons, work to understand the importance of honesty, and share how our personal actions could impact others. Integrity can be supported at home by talking about the impact of being honest and how we can make our daily decisions based around our values.

This week …I can explain my behavior and how it connects to my values

Next week… I can understand how my actions impact others

Update: Earth Day Planters are coming home!

Reminder that your child built a planter today at school, to celebrate Earth Day. They are bringing home their completed planter today and it should also have a baggie with soil and seeds to accompany it, so that you can plant these at home together.

From last week's newsletter:

We are so grateful that Home Depot has donated kits for every single one of our Nashua Stars to build their own planter! This is a perfect opportunity for students to learn about how planting flowers and vegetables help the Earth. Your student will come home with their planter completed, and you can put the soil in the planter, and plant the seeds together at home. We are ready to get out our tools and have a really cool item to bring home to make our Earth a better place!

Lost and Found is Full!

We have many items that are in our lost and found! Please look through photos here to determine if any of these items belong to your family, and direct them to go by lost and found to pick them up. All items remaining in lost and found will be donated on May 2.

Attention, 3rd-5th grade families! MAP Testing is here!

Please support your child by ensuring they get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast, bring a snack to eat in their classroom shortly before testing, and wear layers on all testing days. Thank you for partnering with us to help make your child successful on this important assessment!

Café Open to Family Visitors!

Beginning Monday, March 28th we will be allowing ONE parent per classroom to have lunch with their student(s). At this time you will need to register using our Sign Up Genius link below. We have listed for you the dates and times for each teacher. You must use the Sign Up Genius to be able to eat with your student(s) as we can not accept any walk-in parents. For parents with multiple students in different grades you will need to sign up on each teacher's schedule.

The waiver that allows all students to eat for free will END on the last day of the regular 2021-22 school year. If you have not already done so, please apply NOW if you want your child to eat for free during Summer School and/or for the first 30 days of the 2022-23 School Year. Then apply AGAIN after July 1st, for the remainder of the 2022-23 school (more info on the back of this sheet).

Only one application per household is needed.

Parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to complete the free and reduced meals application online. This can be completed on a computer, tablet, or cell phone: https://frapps.horizonsolana.com/Nork01

Additional information is available on the school website and at www.nkcschools.org under the Fork & Spoon icon with the word “Menu”. Click on the Free or Reduced Meals Tab at the top of the page.

Breakfast and Lunch are FREE for all students who qualify for free or reduced meals.

Parents/guardians are responsible for all breakfast and lunch costs incurred prior to being notified of the results of the application. Payments can be made at MyPaymentsPlus.com or by sending cash or check in an envelope with your child’s ID number and name to the school cafeteria.

Student Arrival- Important! (REPEATED ITEMS)

Reminder: there is no student supervision before 9am on regular school mornings, and before 9:45am on Thursday mornings. Please do not drop your child off by car in front of the building. If your child will arrive at school by car, please follow our drop-off procedure for car riders. If your child is a walker, please ensure that the time they leave home does not have them arriving at school before our doors open. This is critical for student safety, to ensure that they are not waiting unsupervised, and is also important as the weather becomes colder so that students aren’t waiting outside for extended periods of time.

Updated Birthday Treat list (REPEATED ITEM)

Just a reminder, if you are interested in purchasing Birthday treats for your student's classroom. Please call or turn in the form below to the Cafeteria Manager 2 weeks prior to the birthday party. The treats will be given to the class on the designated day.

*The PDF below has a new updated list

Resources for families (REPEATED ITEM)

Hello! My name is Meghan Shipley, School Community Resource Specialist. My main role at Nashua is to help families get connected to resources and outside agencies throughout the Kansas City area. If your family is in need of clothing, food, shelter, or other needs, please click on the link. It is a simple way to mark what you need and I will be able to reach out and offer services. This form will be left up all year long. Feel free to utilize this tool anytime you may be in need!

Reminders about Car Rider Dropoff (REPEATED ITEM)

  • Please ensure that your students are prepared to get out of the vehicle before you pull up to stop (ready to get out with backpacks, masks, water bottles, etc.)
  • If your child is reluctant to exit the vehicle, or if they are unprepared to exit the vehicle for any reason, please pull forward and to the left side while you resolve the issue, so that the line can continue to progress
  • For safety reasons, students should exit the car on the passenger side.
  • To avoid your child receiving a tardy and impacting their attendance, please attempt to complete drop-off before 9:12

Car Rider Line Procedure (REPEATED ITEM)

To ensure safety during arrival and dismissal we ask that all families adhere to the car rider procedure on the map below. Car riders will access their line from the westbound lane of 114th street by way of McGee street. The NKC Buses will access the bus loop by driving eastbound on 114th street.

In addition, if you are lining up early for dismissal, we ask that you not block driveways and mailboxes along 114th street or McGee street.

Thank you so much for your cooperation, as this helps for a smoother dismissal for everyone.
