October & November Highlights
As always, it's been a busy month at Yorkville Elementary School!
The first graders have been learning all about Native Americans and had the opportunity to make their own teepee village.
First and fifth grade buddies came together to create turkeys and to identify things they are thankful for. It's great to see the students working together and having fun!
Third grade students have participated in a number of exciting opportunities for learning! Students applied problem solving skills as they took part in a break out session based on the book If You Take a Mouse to School. As part of Science class, third graders hatched and released butterflies. To celebrate Fire Safety Week, students traveled to the Fire Station. They also traveled to the Golden Rondelle Theater to see “The Know It All Show.”
The fourth grade students celebrated Halloween by participating in a break out activity. Students had to complete tasks from their math chapters to help them solve clues. These clues then gave them codes to help them unlock locks that were connected to chests. Students had 45 minutes to crack the code and try to get into the chests. All teams were successful!
Seventh grade students combined their scientific knowledge and creativity to create a Cell City project!
The seventh and eighth grade students are still talking about their outdoor education experiences at Camp Timber-Lee. They had animal encounters, went horseback riding and canoeing, learned about archery and completed a ropes course.
Students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the Halloween celebrations! The hallways were filled with creative costumes.
Yorkville students celebrated National Children's Book Week. As part of the celebration, guest readers visited primary classrooms and shared their favorite books. Students in 4K through 8th grade gathered in the large gym and participated in a buddy read. Lastly, author Charlie Tennessen and illustrator Chloe Wright visited Yorkville and talked to students about the importance of reading and writing. They also shared the process that was followed in publishing their book entitled Rosie's New Harness.
Students, staff, families and community members gathered to celebrate Veteran's Day and honor loved ones who have served our country. After the school celebration, eighth grade students had the opportunity to visit with and interview veterans. It was a wonderful day!
The girls' basketball teams have been working hard. They just competed in the Yorville Hoops Classic Tournament. The A-team placed second in the tournament while the B-team won the consolation bracket. Congratulations, girls! Go Rams!
