Message from Administration
Dear NMES Families,
Earlier this year we featured one of our School Improvement strategies, Mindsets that Build Resilience and Determination. We want to revisit that strategy as it is one that families can easily support at home. Part of this strategy involves having a growth mindset. Teachers regularly model and consistently reinforce this concept with their students. At home there are ways for you to also build and reinforce a growth mindset in your children.
- Use growth mindset language: When your children face challenges or struggle to learn a new skill, your language tells them what to believe. Instead of saying "It's not that hard," try saying, "You can do hard things." In our weekly emails to families we have been including growth mindset affirmations that you can use with your children.
- Use process praise: Process praise ties children's actions to their success. When children are praised for their efforts and taught to take ownership of their failure, they see failure as an important part of learning. This build confidence and resilience. Process praise can sound like: "Well done. I noticed how much you practiced." Or, when your child gets a good grade, "What helped you do so well?"
- Use positive self-talk: Encourage and model positive self-talk. When you find your child being critical of themselves, tell them it is important to be kind to oneself. If your child is struggling with a task such as tying shoes or learning fractions, stress the power of "yet." Say, "You cannot tie your shoes, yet," or "You cannot multiply fractions, yet." This helps them understand that learning a skill takes time and that it is a process.
There are some great picture books on growth mindset: "Your Fantastic Elastic Brain" by JoAnn Deak; "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds and "The Most Magnificent Thing" by Ashley Spires. These are just a few but there are many more that can be read to your child to reinforce a growth mindset.
Thank you for supporting our school improvement goals, our teachers and most importantly your child! We are better together!

NMES Martin Luther King, Jr. Award
Each year Frederick County Public Schools celebrates the leadership qualities of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by hosting a winter celebration. A representative from each school is chosen to represent the student body and must possess and demonstrate leadership characteristics both in and out of the classroom. This year New Market Elementary is pleased to announce 5th grader Isabella Lievano as our Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award recipient.
We are extremely proud of Isabella and know that she will represent New Market Elementary School well as the recipient of this award. This year’s Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration is scheduled as a virtual event.
Please join us in congratulating Isabella for this great honor!

Family Code Night
New Market Elementary School is pleased to invite every one of our families to participate in National Family Code Night, a free live-stream family learning event for any K-5 school. Regardless of physical location, our school’s community can share this wonderful learning experience in which each child pairs up with a parent or other older partner to do their very first hour of coding together! No experience needed! It’s great fun, proven in thousands of schools nationwide, and now provided via a live-stream. Our Livestream will be Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 7:00 PM. You will join the Livestream at that time at this link: https://www.youtube.com/CSisElementary/live
Family members, teachers, and educators can join the live-stream from home or school to enjoy an important, delightful experience. A live prize drawing for a subscription to Dash’s Neighborhood from Wonder Workshop will be featured at each National Family Code Night. So save the date and get ready for a community learning experience the whole family will love and value.

Hour of Code Week
Hour of Code is an international, week long celebration of computer science and coding! It is designed to encourage everyone to learn more about computing and coding! This year, the celebration will be held from December 6th-12th! At NMES, students will learn about coding in media through both unplugged games and online activities. You can explore coding at home with your children and play fun coding games together with our Coding Choice Board!
Weather Guidelines and Outdoor Recess
It is difficult to set guidelines that fit every circumstance and condition with regards to outside activities during cold weather. Principals use their discretion and good judgment as to whether or not students will go outside, as well as the duration of the outside activity. Sometimes we may opt for a shorter recess period in cold temperatures or specify a temperature above 20 degrees as the cut-off point for going out. Elementary students should not go outdoors for recess or physical education whenever the temperature falls below 20 degrees, including the wind chill factor. The temperature cut-off at NMES is 20 degrees, so please remember to dress your child in the appropriate clothing (labeled coat, hat and gloves).
