Dear Team,

I hope you had an amazing three day weekend. I am sitting at my kitchen table, reflecting on this Labor Day. Did you know that over the past 130 years, our nation has celebrated the American Worker and their contributions on the first Monday of September?

Thank you for making it your goal and your mission to provide our Cavaliers with a world class education. Thank you for providing them with an education that will prepare them to be College AND Career Ready. Our efforts to provide our students with the first best lesson every day goes well beyond content knowledge, test preparation, and grades. We are teaching our students character traits that include perseverance, time management, and problem solving. We are all partners in education and together we assist our young Cavaliers in learning these traits so they are prepared to be amazing scholars and citizens in our community.

We have two weeks left before we go on to Fall Break. Let us continue to engage our students in meaningful learning experiences. We will continue with the expectation of posting effective Learning Objectives and reflecting on our lesson plans. Collaborative work is our focus this year: we expect to see this in the classroom amongst our students but this also includes working with our PLCs and our departments. Doing so sounds like an easy task, but we know it requires a lot of effort and just the right attitude. We have to be honest with ourselves and genuine as we review our student results. In our Zone meetings we have heard about embracing a "Growth Mindset," the idea that success is based on learning, persistence, and hard-work, and persevering instead of giving up or shutting down when receiving feedback. We are heroes under construction, we continue to learn and grow ourselves and our students will benefit from it!!! THANK YOU for engaging in this growth process.

Professional Reading: The Secret To Sustainable Learning (by ReLeah Cossett Lent)

Schools that have earned the NCUS (National Center for Urban School Transformation)
Award have one thing in common: students claim that they feel motivated and engaged at their school. I believe it is beneficial for us to learn about what the research is telling us about engagement and motivation and how we as educators, can apply these concepts into our practice.

I will be sharing some of these articles with you in the next couple of weeks. I am asking that you take the time to read the articles; I will be asking some reflective questions regarding these articles for PLC time. (I will make copies of this article and place copies in your boxes.)
