Mr. Doyle's Message
I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving. As far-fetched as it seems, we are nearing the halfway mark of the school year. Friday, December 16th marks the end of Quarter #2. We continue to motivate and work with students to build independence and ownership of their learning while here at Creekside. Please encourage your child(ren) to reach out to their teachers if they are in need of extra help or have questions regarding their grades. It's important to embrace every opportunity to grow and learn, so we ask for your support at home to encourage your student(s) to finish their semester strong. Our staff is extremely accommodating and willing to go above and beyond to support all of our students. As always, if you have any questions never hesitate to contact me.
Enthusiastically,
Mr. Doyle

Items include: Coats, Hats, Gloves, Scarves, and Boots.
Please drop off any donations to Creekside by Wednesday, December 7th.
Thank you in advance for your generosity to help support our Woodstock community!

8th Grade
MATH:
In math, we are beginning to learn about the Pythagorean Theorem. Students should be able to:-Use the Pythagorean theorem to determine unknown lengths in real-world contexts. --Identify the conditions necessary for a triangle to be a right triangle.
-Prove the converse of the Pythagorean theorem.
ALGEBRA:
In Algebra, we are beginning Chapter 4 Systems of Equations. Students will learn how to solve word problems by writing a pair of equations, called a system of equations. Then they will solve the system of equations with the same multiple representations you used for solving linear equations: table, graph, and by manipulating the equations. Along the way, students will develop ways to solve different forms of systems, and will learn how to recognize when one method may be more efficient than another. By the end of this chapter, they will know multiple ways to find the point of intersection of two lines and will be able to solve systems that arise from different situations
LITERACY:
In Block Literacy, we are focusing on Suspense and what makes a story suspenseful and scary. We will look at how an author will create suspense using word choice, mood and a variety of other literary techniques. In the Single Literacy classes, we are finishing up our author’s craft essays and will begin the Holocaust Unit.
DUAL LITERACY:
In Dual Literacy we are wrapping up our unit on Culture and Belonging. Students will be wrapping up reading La Línea. We have been focusing on analyzing the use of the author’s figurative and literal language, mood, and tone.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
In Social Studies the focused theme since the beginning of the school year has been the development of Civil Right in the US. We are currently studying the leaders and events which shaped the Civil Rights Era. Throughout the unit, students have learned about the landmark court case of Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka, KS which was the first major victory in the desegregation of our nation’s school system. The effects of court cases like this are far-reaching and assisted with policy changes in the US. Events like this and other examples help to give the student an understanding of what shaped some of USA's current events.
SCIENCE:
In Science we continue to take a deeper dive into our matter unit by exploring how the Periodic Table of Elements is organized as well as the properties of each of the main periods and families. In addition, we are learning how to interpret the information provided in each elements’ square and are utilizing those data points to help us construct Bohr and Lewis models of various elements. We are also working to understand the structure of atoms: including protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Read180:
Students in Read 180 have been working on Workshop 8: Follow the Money. This week we have written our paragraph about Frank Bourassa breaking the law by counterfeiting money. We have also been busy MAP testing and taking our Interim Workshop Assessment. Testing results will be sent home next week.
