What is it?

The health condition is sickle cell anemia. This happens when there are not enough red blood cells working together. Sickle cell anemia is a inherited form of anemia. Anemia has to do with the lack of blood cells. Health red blood cells are flexible, round, and move easily through your blood vessels.

Facts

  1. Anyone who has SCT can inherit at least one sickle cell gene from one parent and the other normal gene from the other parent. This can be called sickle cell trait.
  2. Sickle cell anemia can cause very much pain in joints and can cause fatigue.
  3. About 1 in every 12 African Americans have a sickle cell trait.
  4. If you have sickle cell anemia, your blood cells become sticky and hard.
  5. Sickle cell can die early which can cause shortages in the blood.
  6. People who have the trait, do not have it.
  7. Sickle cell trait can be diagnosed using simple blood tests.
  8. Living with the disease can be hard, but you can still enjoy many activities.

Symptoms

  • Pain in joints
  • Fatigue
  • Sudden pain in the chest
  • Delaying development
  • Inflamed fingers or toes

Treatments

If you have sickle cell anemia, you can reduce the pain by taking certain medication.

You can also treat it by using a blood transfusion. This is useful to replace the lack within the blood stream.

Causes
