The Cub Corner
Expect Excellence In Everything
December 10, 2021
A Note from Mr. Bender
It’s hard to believe the end of the semester is quickly approaching. We are looking forward to a fun last week before break. Our teachers will be planning engaging activities and students will participate in winter parties.
PTA held the annual Reflections competition during the fall. Two of our Woodward Mill students, Bramblett Pearson and Megan Nguyen, won first place at the regional competition and will now be continuing onto the state competition. Way to go! Please see the complete list of Reflections winners below.
There will not be a Cub Corner newsletter next Friday. The newsletter will resume in January. I hope each of you have a wonderful winter break filled with family and friends! We will see you in 2022!

As part of Gwinnett County Public Schools’ family engagement initiative, the school district seeks to empower parents with tools that allow them to help their children at home. Our AKS at Home project provides math and language arts resources to support families of children in grades K-5 so that they truly are partners in their children’s learning. This support is available for families to access in the format that suits them and their schedule best. They can attend live virtual meetings, view recorded information at a time that best fits their schedule, and gain tips and suggestions on how to best help their children through tip sheets on a wide variety of topics.
We invite our families to sign up for a virtual session to learn more about how they can support their children.

Character Trait and Mindfulness Activity of the Month
Every month, we focus on a character trait to instill great character into our cubs. The character trait for the month of December is Caring. Caring means looking out for others and treating them with kindness. As a reminder, teachers will be choosing one student this month who has exhibited caring the most to represent his/her class as the Cub of the Month.

2022 Georgia Picture Book Nominee Spotlight
The Three Billy Goats Buenos by Susan Middleton Elya
A rhyming twist on the classic tale in which the goats help fix what is making the troll so grumpy in order to cross the bridge. This story, which smoothly incorporates Spanish words, provides a great opportunity to discuss kindness.
Reading Rewards
Reading logs for the month of December were sent home in last week’s Friday folders. Students will return their December reading logs AFTER the winter break. I hope your child will find lots of time to read and log their minutes over the holidays! Logs for January will not be distributed until AFTER the holiday break. You are encouraged to log any early January minutes on a piece of paper at home and transfer the information to your January log once it is received.
December logs should reflect 20 different dates in December, with at least 20 total minutes of reading for each date. Incomplete logs will not be accepted. Students can read independently or with their parents at home. After completing the monthly requirement, logs are returned to the homeroom teacher. Parent initials are required in order to verify the reading.
If you have any questions about the Reading Rewards program, refer to the reading rewards link on the media center page of the school website or contact Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.

Computer Science Education Week was celebrated in GCPS Dec. 6-12. Computer Science is EVERYWHERE! Our students probably don’t remember a time when they didn’t have access to technology in some respect, whether through a phone, laptop, or a gaming system. As our world grows and changes, it is more important than ever for students to have opportunities to grow as tech users and innovators. Click the link below to learn more about the role Computer Science plays in your child’s education.
