Welcome
A Look Back
We have published our first collaborative blog! I am so excited about this ongoing project and partnership with the NGSSmtoc Creators team. We already know blogging is a great reflection opportunity for us to grow as professionals. Blogging can also support our teacher leadership. Making our thinking visible supports the work of other teachers. This collaborative blog also has some “groundbreaking” potential. We are inviting others to submit 250 word descriptions of their NGSS goals so the blog (and resulting professional growth) can continue to grow and impact more educators. In addition, the blog contains an opportunity for educators to join a Twitter list that will be managed by the NGSSmtoc. This list is divided into the three categories of goals that emerged in the collaborative blog:
Phenomena https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qbUJWisQ3-1qB5MuQ62EKkOZ_ANw0mXU6sX13t4_Oo8/edit?usp=sharing
Science and Engineering Practices https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lNSx30_Yf2lemn12npVpGmRmeCEwaKpvZ343oeJRywc/edit?usp=sharing
Inquiry and Evidence https://docs.google.com/document/d/17qHyYdHIAOlakCBwfu0Ly2exShep84njUx2xWSDionc/edit?usp=sharing
The team will be gathering, curating, and sharing resources to support growth in these areas to the people on the list (and to the Twitterverse). Please join this work and take the opportunity to lead. Next to each category name is a link to a shared google folder where you can add links to resources that you find around the topic. The goal is that each person find at least 1 resource per month. Thanks in advance for your leadership!
On the Horizon
Discover the NGSS E-Book
Thank you to Renee and The Fund KY for purchasing the Discover the NGSS ebook to support our professional learning. Here is a description of the resource:
Rich with gorgeous color photography, dynamic enhancements, and interactive features that enable you to learn, share, and explore, NSTA's highly interactive Enhanced E-books provide a professional learning experience that is both engaging and inspiring. Animations, simulations, and video bring content to life, while pop-up review questions and special notes help underscore the most crucial points of knowledge. Each e-book is correlated to the Disciplinary Core Ideas of the Next Generation Science Standards.
In addition to deepening our NGSS understanding so we can be effective teachers and NGSS leaders, we have the opportunity to work with NSTA in figuring out ways the ebook can be used to support PLC work. This is a great opportunity for us to lead and work with a national organization.
Our Discover the NGSS journey will begin this month in our December meeting on December 16 at 3:30 PM ET on Google Hangout.
January NGID Meeting
Our January NGID convening will be Jan 21-22 in Bowling Green. Our learning topics will be centered around the Discover the NGSS ebook and the NGSS EQuIP rubric from Achieve, Inc. This will be a great opportunity to increase our understanding as well as learn tools and strategies for leading NGSS work in our schools and districts. Please bring the following to the meeting:
Your NGID unit anchored by the Optical Illusions phenomenon.
Support materials used in instruction
Assessments used in instruction
Student samples
We will be providing an overview of our Jan training in our December meeting.
ECET2 Presentation
Our presentation was accepted for ECET2KY! We are excited that on January 22, 2016 we will be sharing our NGID journey with other educators in the state in a presentation. Please join us. Your role can be as big as you are comfortable with. Planning and delivering a presentation is great leadership training. Complete the Google form if you are interested in joining the planning process, the presentation on Jan 22, or both.
