School Days
9/24/23
Hello Rodman Families,
We had a amazing week! Students are making great connections with teachers and classmates throughout these early weeks of school. Our Rodman Preschool theme of "Me and My Family" will continue until the end of this week and transition to "Fall and Forest" for October. Students are doing an amazing job engaging with the curriculum!
To keep you connected to safety protocols, here are some of our district procedures, so your are aware of any impacts that may come up during your child's school day.
1- Locked doors - school employees will continue to be vigilant about keeping exterior doors closed and locked at all times. Rodman Preschool parents are asked to only use the main preschool entrance located in the back of the Rodman building. This means no use of the front administrative entrance or entrance by front gym door during school hours.
2 - Buzz in - When we buzz a visitor in, we will say "Welcome to Rodman Preschool. What is your name and how can we help you?" If an office staff member has any concerns about a visitor, they will not let them in.
3 - School Grounds - School campuses are closed to the general pubic during school hours. There are certain exceptions for the community tennis courts and track at the High School, but all other areas are restricted. If a non-school person is on the grounds during the school day, they will be asked to leave.
4 - Safety Drills - The preschool will be completing safety drills throughout the school year including fire drills, shelter in place drills, and lock down drills. These drills will incorporate the use of varying safety personnel from our community. Drills may require students to leave the building or stay within the environment they are in. Any actual or practice drills will be communicated to families throughout the school year to keep families connected.
If you have any questions regarding safety, please contact me.
Best Regards,

Canton Special Olympics Soccer Program
In September, Special Olympics MA plans to start its nineteenth Soccer season in Canton. This program is open to all students in grades 2-12. Soccer is part of the program created by the partnership of Canton Public Schools, Canton Recreational Dept. and Special Olympics Massachusetts to provide year-round athletic training. In the winter we offer Basketball …and in the spring we offer Track & Field.
Special Olympics provides quality sports training and athletic competition for individuals with cognitive delays and other types of intellectual impairment. The Special Olympics Unified® Program, which is operating in Canton, is a very inclusive program that matches special needs student-athletes with similar-age volunteers to train together as teammates.
We are very fortunate that our great coach, Jeff Erickson, has again agreed to coach this year’s soccer program. The training sessions for Soccer will be held on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 PM. The location will be Devol Field. The first session will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19th. There will be 8 practice sessions.
There are no fees for this program.
Please let me know if your student plans to enroll in the Soccer program by e-mailing me at wrsilvia@aol.com.
Also tell other parents and students about this program and encourage them to join us.
Sincerely,
Walter Silvia
Superintendent Note
We are so thrilled to announce the first of four Galvin Middle School Building Project Community Forums. These forums are part of the community engagement element that help inform the design and direction of the GMS Building Project, which is currently in the Feasibility Phase of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) process.
The first GMS Building Project Community Forum will be held on Wednesday, September 27, from 7-8 p.m., in the CHS Library. Our Design Firm Ai3, in collaboration with our Owner’s Project Manager (OPM) LeftField, will facilitate the forum
All are welcome, and all stakeholders in the Canton Community -- even those who may not have students in the school system currently -- are encouraged to attend. The more voices and perspectives, the better.
The September 27 Community Forum will focus on an overview of the project, including timelines, scope and milestones. The second half of the forum will involve an engaging activity that involves looking at an oversized site map of the GMS building and land space and making suggestions for use by schools and the community.
I have suggested that this is a “hopes and dreams” meeting, and really a great gathering of input on how the building and the site can enhance our educational and overall community. Leaders of youth programming -- from sports to the arts to the extracurriculars -- are encouraged to attend.
There is no need to RSVP. Please just arrive with your curiosity and your ideas. We will start promptly at 7 p.m., so please try to arrive by 6:45 p.m. in the CHS Library.
Click on the following LINK for an overview of the Galvin Middle School Project. This project website will be continually updated and serve as a repository for resources. I would encourage everyone to bookmark this link.
There will be three additional forums in October, November and December. Here are the “save the dates” and the themes for each one.
Wednesday October 25 -- The entire focus of this forum will be grade configuration (Grades 5-8 or 6-8). Location TBD.
Monday, November 20 -- The focus will be continued follow up on grade configuration and the consideration of a middle school auditorium. Location TBD.
Wednesday, December 20 -- The focus of the fourth forum will be an opportunity for a review of input and emerging themes from the process. Location TBD.
We are embarking on a great journey, and we want every member of the Canton community to be informed and have opportunities for input and engagement. We hope you can attend!
Sincerely,
Derek Folan
Superintendent
December Event
A sensory friendly Nutcracker performance will be taking place at the Opera House in Boston December 6th. The Boston Ballet has been working hard over the past few years to be more inclusive. During the performance, they will allow iPads and other soothing devices, have less lights etc, and allow people back to their seats if they need to leave to take breaks. The greater demand from the public may hopefully encourage Boston Ballet to add more sensory friendly performances throughout the season. Hope you can attend!
