"The soul that is within me no man can degrade. I am not the one that is being degraded on account of this treatment, but those who are inflicting it upon me..." -Frederick Douglass
Black History Month is celebrated each year in the United States during the month of February to coincide with the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and Frederick Douglass on February 14. (https://www.pbssocal.org/education/families)
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history. (https://www.history.com/topics/black-history/black-history-month)

We are so thankful to our families for the many ways you show your appreciation of our staff throughout the year. We are feeling especially thankful for the appreciation shown over the past two days! THANK YOU to Stacy Naur (mom of Lizzy and Joseph) for organizing a special treat for Thursday AND lunch from Panera on Friday! Each staff was provided with a lunch (tailored to their choosing) that was individually boxed to ensure health and safety. In addition to lunch, staff members were treated to "cup of coffee" on Conference day too!
On behalf of our entire staff....THANK YOU so much!
Another note of THANKS!

IMPORTANT Update regarding COVID 19 Reminders
Per the Daily Screener (found below) please note that the Oakland County Health Department recommends consulting your child’s medical provider and getting them tested for COVID-19 if they present with one symptom from #1 and/or two symptoms from #2.
Your child may return to school with proof of a negative PCR test or a doctor’s note stating the student is cleared to return or after they have been home for 10 days after the start of their symptoms and have been fever free for over 24 hours without fever reducing medications.
If the student passes the screening, (having only one symptom listed in #2) they may return after being fever free for 24 hours without taking any fever reducing medications.
If a student is excluded from school due to being suggestive of COVID-19, all household members/siblings are also excluded until proof / documentation of a negative PCR test result or documentation from a doctor that clearly states student is able to return to school is required for students to return less than 10 days after having symptoms suggestive of COVID-19.
Valentine's Day Classroom Celebrations
Attention Kindergarten Parents/Caregivers
Dear Kindergarten Parents/Caregivers,
I wanted to share with you a new opportunity that’s available only to Kindergarten parents and caregivers at Oakley Park Elementary. Starting on February 25th, I along with some help from Ms. Bastuba and Ms. Dabish will be running a weekly book study in the evening. The book we have chosen to highlight and discuss is the much loved book by Jim Trelease titled the Read-Aloud Handbook.
As a father of three boys, my wife and I learned early on the importance of reading to our children. This book was the most important book I read as a father. It helped me understand the importance of literature in our children’s lives. In addition, the information provided within the book helped me to connect with my sons in a way I didn’t think was possible. It’s an amazing book with tons of information for parents of young children.
The group will meet Virtually (via Zoom) on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 7:00 pm for eleven weeks. For those that sign up for the book study, the book will be provided at no cost to you. As a gift, at the end of the eleven weeks, you can keep the book.
If you would like to participate in our group, please send an email to me at scottnolan@wlcsd.org. The sign up deadline is 12:00 noon on Thursday February 4th.
We would love to have you join us!
Sincerely,
Scott M. Nolan

From the District Parent Update 1-21-21
Although our teachers’ acumen with technology and virtual learning may allow for us to minimize snow days in the future, the current environment also calls for a little joy, freedom, and normalcy. Therefore, if weather conditions warrant it, we will have some snow days this school year with no synchronous or asynchronous learning.
