How to succeed in math this year
And NOT lose your mind :)
I just want to help you succeed in math. Now yes, it will take some time on some assignments and projects but in the end, these lessons play off one another. So this is where a growth mindset will help you out.
What is a growth mindset you ask? Try looking this over if you are not sure.
So let's use this willingness to try again and grow from our mistakes. Along with that please look this over to help your year run smoother.
Try thinking in a different way when you do not succeed at first. This poster below will help you reword or reset you mind in a different way when you think you can not succeed in math. PLEASE print this poster off and keep it beside you to help you have a better understanding of a growth mindset.
Always proofread your answers, use complete sentences, and show all work!!!!!
Note taking
Below is a video on how to take great notes.
Here is another note-taking form we call a list form.
Note-taking can be different for math. Here is a way Mrs. Mittler likes to show students for math: Video

General Strategies for Student Success
Help Box Messages
All students are encouraged to utilize the Help Box feature. The Help Box is the primary way in which students and teachers collaborate and discuss questions and problems, especially problems that are causing the student some level of difficulty. There is a strong correlation between students who seek help with their questions using the Help Box feature before submitting an assignment and success. If a student is struggling, a great way parents can help is to encourage their child to utilize the Help Box and monitor their child’s use of this feature.
The LiveBinder is a school-wide resource EA uses to benefit student learning and educational independence and provide 24/7 access to resources to help students with their assignments. The Livebinder is an online storage area with resources organized by concept and/or Course/Unit/Assignment/Question. When a teacher observes that there is a question or concept students find challenging he/she shares resources on Livebinder, so all students have access to the resources. Please encourage your student to use Livebinder if they have questions, and also encourage students to ask their teacher any questions they find challenging so that that teacher can create resources that benefit all students. Please watch this video to help you see how it works.
If you see any formula sheets or pictures you like from the livebinder sections. Please feel free to copy and paste them into a notebook or print them off to keep with you. I place these in there for that purpose of you to print them off for use at all times :)
Hand-Written Notes
As a helpful reminder, students are encouraged to take handwritten notes as they work through the lessons. These handwritten notes can be used to answer any question that is found on a lesson, quiz, and test!
Projects
Projects are only given in honors classes for math. These will be opened the whole time you are in the unit this project is in. Projects will have due dates but the only time they MUST be turned in by is when you take the unit test. So please take advantage of working on it little by little the whole time you are in the unit. Projects relate to what you have learned in the lessons of that unit and in real life situations as well. Please look in livebinder for extra help on these projects. Don't forget projects are worth 30% of your overall grade so please ask for help if Livebinder was not helpful enough for you. I would love for you to get the best possible score :)
Blank / Ingenuine Submissions
If a student is surprised by a score that is much lower than anticipated, encourage your child to search for blank submissions. Questions that prompt students to write in their answers (and show their work) are quite common at Enlightium, and they usually highlight content that will be revisited for quizzes and tests. Unfortunately, these types of questions are the questions that many students tend to skip, either because they do not know the answer (and in that case, they should use the Help Box and wait to submit the assignment) or because they are simply choosing to not put in the work. Enlightium has created a school-wide policy regarding blank or ingenuine work. According to this policy, students will receive a zero on the question(s), and an additional 15% off of the total assignment. Please read over your student handbook on our school's blank policy (pg 27 in family handbook). In nearly every case, when a student submits a blank answer teachers (1) create awareness of the policy and (2) offer an invitation to correct the blank work thereby receiving credit on the question itself and removing the additional deduction. Answering all questions can make a huge difference for a student’s grade!
Corrections
As stated in the EA Family Handbook, lessons and quizzes are automatically reassigned for a second attempt through Ignitia if a student receives below a 73% on the first attempt. If a student still scores below 70% after this second attempt, he/she may submit corrections on quizzes up to a 70% score by emailing their teacher the hand wirtten answers for the corrections. A student can receive up to 50% of that point value on each question by (1) stating the correct answer and (2) show the teacher how to get the correct answer by *showing ALL work if the updated answer is, in fact, the correct answer.
****Please make sure all quiz corrections are done before you take the test. Once the test is done no more corrections can be done in this unit.****
Here is a video to show some example of how this should look to earn the most points possible on corrections.
Please do NOT copy answers from other websites!
When you take answers from websites and say it is yours this is academic dishonesty and is a form of cheating and really you are stealing someone's work that they took the time to do.
Even biblically it says:
A great way to explain this came from gotquestions.com
"Cheating is essentially acting dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain a personal advantage. Cheating disregards set rules in favor of personal success. When a selfish desire for victory or accomplishment outweighs a moral commitment to truthfulness and equality, cheating can become a temptation. But as new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), we can choose to refuse harmful temptations (Matthew 26:41; 1 Corinthians 10:13).
Christians must strive to glorify the Lord with their thoughts and actions (1 Corinthians 3:16). Cheating goes against the goodness that will glorify Him. Dishonesty mars an individual’s integrity and reputation (Proverbs 10:9). Not presenting oneself truthfully is lying, and lying is a sin (Leviticus 19:11; Proverbs 12:22).
Even though the world excuses dishonesty when it deems it trivial, God asks His followers to be truth-tellers all the time. If a student does poorly on a test because he didn’t study, his low grade is a natural consequence of a poor choice. God will honor that honesty, and the student can learn from his mistakes. A bad grade on a test may teach and motivate a student to study harder ahead of time or get a tutor or get enough sleep the night before. Grades in school should represent what has been learned in the class and the subsequent work of the student. Cheating seeks to bypass the learning process and manipulate consequences through dishonesty.
Followers of Christ need to walk in the light, and cheating prevents people from seeing Christ’s glory. Dishonesty taints the goodness the children of God should have (Philippians 2:15; Ephesians 5:8). If our own Heavenly Father condemns lying (Proverbs 6:16–19), there is no way a believer can justify even a “harmless” lie such as cheating.
Cheating is a selfish act that gives us an advantage over others who are facing the same challenge. As Christians, we should seek to help others fairly and justly while maintaining moral integrity and a godly reputation. Cheating simply does not help uphold that standard."

When taking a test or quiz, using other sites is NOT ALLOWED. This is another form of cheating. Quizzes/tests are meant to show me what you know, not meant to show me what you can find online. Be aware, should you cheat or copy answers on a test or quiz, it will result in an automatic 0% on it.
