Parent Coordinator Updates January 13, 2020
From Dr. Werner
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break and the new year is off to a great start. Happy 2020!
As I reflect on the holiday season, I am reminded of what a special community WJPS is. Students were brimming over with enthusiasm about starting campaigns to help those in need. Our students, your children, collected toys for sick children at St. Mary's Hospital, donated food and clothing, visited the elderly in Ozanam Hall, read to the students at PS 32, and extended themselves in so many ways to be helpful in and around school, and they continue to do so. Thank you for supporting these efforts. As the year progresses, please continue to support WJPS by attending PTA meetings and through monetary contributions. If every family made a donation of $25 per year, the PTA would have over $15,000 annually to spend on our school. Imagine what we could do! Please visit
WJPS PTA for more information.
Our wonderful Parent Coordinator, Helen Reed, has organized important events and updates for you in the newsletter that follows. On January 14, immediately following the PTA Meeting, we are hosting "9th Grade Road to College" where Mr. Lumetta and Ms. Paplow will be sharing important information about the college process and what students need to be doing now to ensure their success. If you are available the morning of February 4th, please drop by for coffee with me and PTA Executive Board members. This informal gathering is a great way for us to reconnect. Save the date for March 2020 Parent Teacher Conferences: Thursday evening, March 19 and the afternoon of March 20.
I am looking forward to seeing you at these events.
PTA Meeting is Tuesday, January 14, 2020
February 4 PTA Meeting - Coffee with the Principal @ 9:00 am
The March PTA Meeting, March 3, 2020 will be at 7:00 pm and will include the Principal's Honor Roll Ceremony. More details will follow.
9th Grade Road to College Meeting is January 14 at 7:00 pm
Student Blood Drive is Wednesday, January 15
WJPS Student Government is sponsoring a Blood Drive on January 15, 2020 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Students aged 17 and up may donate blood on their own, but those who are 16 years old need a permission slip which they can get from Ms. Meneses.
Parents and guardians are welcome to donate as well! Please send an email to Ms. Meneses at firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, child's name/grade and what time you are coming.
January Days Off: January 20 & January 27
January 27: WJPS students do not report to school on Monday, January 27, 2020 due to a Chancellor's Clerical Day. This includes all students - middle and high school. Traditionally this day was only for high schools, but the Department of Education extended it to include schools that serve grades 6-12.
January Regents Week
All middle school students will be in attendance.
Only high school students who are taking an exam will come to school that week - only on the day and time of their exam.
January Regents week is primarily for students who are making up a Regents exam they missed or to retake an exam for a higher score. Students who are registered for an exam were given a confirmation. If you have any questions about this, please send an email to the Program Office at email@example.com.
Report Cards will be available January 28
These grades represent the end of Term 1.
For High School students, these grades will be included on transcripts that show all credits earned and GPA. Middle school students have an annualized program where final grades are posted on the June Report Card.
Term 2 begins on January 28, 2020.
When Term 2 begins on Tuesday, January 28, some students will see minor changes to their programs. The most important change will be the 2 day/3 day flip. For example, students who have PE 2 days a week and Health 3 days a week, will see those classes "flipped" to PE 3 days a week and Health 2 days a week - and vice versa.
WJPS MS Students Do Not Attend School on March 4, 2020
Seniors will have a field trip for their class picture, and plans are being arranged for ninth grade - details will follow.
