Summer Remote Learning Opportunities for K-12 Students

As communicated in last week’s newsletter, we will be offering some limited remote learning opportunities in our summer school program for students in grades K-8. Intervention will be provided in reading and math to fill gaps for students that are in need of more targeted skill instruction. English language instruction will also be available. Each of these aforementioned services will be provided by teacher recommendation only and will be free of charge.

Enrichment programming will be provided for those looking to stay engaged in some more advanced problem solving and/or to enhance their creative writing skills. Our Greene 101 and Junior High Launch transition programs are currently on hold until we know more about state reopening directives.

Picking Up Personal Items and Dropping off Materials

On May 18-20, we will open our buildings in limited ways for the retrieval of items and dropoff of materials. Your child's school has sent additional information regarding a staggered pickup process which will be done by grade level/team, and last name. We will be adhering to all state-mandated health protocols during pickup and dropoff. Students will be required to wear masks or protective face coverings while in the buildings.

Seniors who did not return Chromebooks, chargers, and textbooks at graduation gown pick up should return them per the high school schedule.

If your student does not have any items of value at school, you do not need to attend. We will donate any leftover school supplies to Operation Give Back.

Chromebook Repair Appointments

As a reminder, all K-11 students should keep their Chromebooks through Summer Break. The Sycamore Technology Department will be available during May 18-20 personal item pickup/material drop off to fix or replace broken devices. Please make an appointment for this service by emailing helpdesk@sycamoreschools.org

Meal Services & Grocery Distribution

The last day for Sycamore Child Nutrition meal services will be Wednesday, May 20. Look for special messages from your Sycamore Family!

Sycamore Bridges and Operation Give Back will also hold their final grocery distribution on Wednesday, May 20. Please look for additional information in your bags about resources available to families this summer.

Additional Summer Benefits

Gov. Mike DeWine announced on May 12 that the state has been approved by the USDA to operate its Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) plan. This allows the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services to distribute SNAP benefits to 850,000 students across Ohio who relied on free and reduced-price meal programs when school was in session. The benefits will be mailed directly to students, and families do not need to apply to be eligible. Click here for more information.

Special Services

Thank you to our parents of students with disabilities for collaborating with special education staff to support the needs of your children as they received special education services remotely. The creativity, commitment and perseverance of our special education staff in providing remote services has been both heartwarming and challenging, but was done with the best interest of your children at the forefront of all decisions. As we continue to plan moving forward, the best interests and needs of our students with disabilities will remain at the forefront of our decisions, with health and safety remaining as a priority.

Understanding that this extended time away from school and IEP services has been uniquely challenging for each of our students with disabilities, we do intend to address this individually as well. Once school resumes, IEP teams will convene and determine what impact the ordered school closure period had on student progress related to targeted skills, and will discuss how best to address that impact. Further guidance from the US Department of Education and/or Ohio Department of Education will continue to be shared with parents via district communications.

Planning for Fall 2020

Sycamore Community Schools is committed to engaging students in learning while keeping their health and safety a top priority during the COVID-19 crisis. The district is collaborating with state and local health officials as we consider every possible scenario to safely provide educational opportunities in Fall 2020. With the uncertainty of this developing situation in mind, we are carefully evaluating a number of options for the start of next year, including complete remote learning and a combination of remote and in-school learning. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we consider the potential impact on the education, services, and lives of our students, staff, and families. Please continue to check your primary email address as well as the district’s social media and website for more information as our plans are solidified during Summer Break. We will scale back our weekly communications to bi-weekly beginning next week.
