Mapping a Path for Success
Formative Assessment, Modeling, & Scaffolding
Models in Middle School Math
Math is more than just the numbers
- Above, 7th graders use math manipulatives in Ms. Walker's class to picture adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers. They have meaningful conversations as they compare the models to the math.
- Below, 8th graders in Ms. Farris' class first practice together with what a linear equation would look like on a coordinate plane. Then, each student chooses their own numbers to plug into the equation in order to make their own model.
- In both classes, the teachers know the importance of circulating through the class, asking questions that challenge student thinking, and use formative assessment to support all learners.
Applying grammar in a real world application
Ms. Hammond and her 8th grade ELA students found a way to review the parts of speech in a creative way that connects to student writing. Students created their own "newspapers" with articles about the various parts of speech. They wrote stories about each part of speech to demonstrate an understanding of when and how it should be used. Below is an image of one student's page and links to two other students' "newspapers". At a glance, as Ms. Hammond moved about the room, she could gauge her learners ability to apply the parts of speech appropriately in writing.
