PES Media Center News - April 8, 2015

Public Libary Visitors

We were delighted to have song and story time with Mr. Andy and Ms. Marcia today during Kindergarten ROW. These two awesome librarians are from the St. Johns County Public Library's Main Branch. Students enjoyed the bass and ukulele while singing some of Pete the Cat's Groovy Songs. Mr. Andy read the story Pirate Pete's: Talk Like a Pirate. We all learned about the fun activities for kids at the Public Library on Thursdays @ 4. Visit the libraries main calendar for more details on each week's activities.

April AR Challenge is Non-fiction

Each month the media center hosts an AR Challenge. In April students can read 4 books within the non-fiction genre. Then they take AR tests to show that they have actually read the books. To qualify for the challenge, students must read within their ZPD (reading range set by STAR Test) and pass the AR tests with a 70% or higher. Teachers will use a short form to sign-off on the student’s successful completion of the challenge. Finally, students can come to the media center to pick up their reward. Each challenge has a Brag Tag signifying the challenge and students will have their names announced on WPES. To see all of this year's challenges and download the recording sheet visit http://www-pes.stjohns.k12.fl.us/media/sample-page/ar-challenges.

Birthday Book Club

The Palencia Elementary School Media Center’s Birthday Book Club is a wonderful way to commemorate your child’s birthday. Your participation not only enriches the library collection but allows you and your child to be personally involved in its growth.

If you would like to take part in the Birthday Book Club, a donation of one new hard back book is requested. This book should be a book that your child really likes and one that we don’t have in the media center already. You can choose a new book at the book store or a book from the Book Fair. A quick check of our library catalog (Alexandria) will tell you if we already have the book. In lieu of a book, you may make a monetary donation of $15 and your child can choose from recently acquired books that are waiting to be processed.
