Jumprope for Heart
Students in grades Kindergarten through six have the opportunity to participate in “Jump Rope for Heart”. This is a statewide program sponsored by the American Heart Association and recognized by the Shawnee Mission School District. This event is held to fight heart disease and promote cardiovascular fitness.
The Rising Star “Jump Rope for Heart” will be held the week of April 9th – 13th during your child’s Physical Education class.
All money collected will go directly to the American Heart Association. All donations must be turned in to Mr. Haskell no later than Thursday, April 19th. Refer to the packet for gifts that will be given for designated amounts raised. Make checks payable to the American Heart Association. Online donations are also available.
Students were given Jump for Heart packets during Physical Education class.
One name will be drawn from all the participants and that student will receive a pizza party with two friends and Mr. Haskell!
Students do not have to know how to jump rope in order to participate. Other activities will be offered to accommodate various ages and abilities. Students are not under any pressure to perform, but to simply exercise at their own pace and have fun.
FOOD SERVICE….Did you know…………
Did you know there are Nutrition Standards for All Foods Sold in School called ‘Smart Snacks in Schools’? The guidelines went into effect July 1, 2014. The law has specific nutrition standards for all foods and beverages sold to students outside the school meal programs; on the school campus; and at any time during the school day. This includes foods and beverages sold a la carte in the cafeteria, in school stores, at snack bars, through fundraising, from vending machines or any other venues that sell food to students – including coffee shops and bake sales. The school day is defined from the midnight before, to 30 minutes after the end of the instructional school day. For more information, please visit the Smart Snacks section of the SMSD Food Service webpage.
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation Smart Snacks Product Calculator can be used for food and beverage items to determine if they meet the nutrition standards. Print off the results page summary along with a copy of the product’s label for documentation. This documentation should be submitted to the school’s nurse to request approval for a fundraising event.
Don’t forget – if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit. All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.
The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district’s website at http://foodservices.smsd.org.
ALSO......3rd 4th 5th and 6th can now buy snacks at lunch time. Prices ranges from .50 to .85 cents. If you don't have money on your accounts, students will need to bring change for that day.

Thousands of students have spent their summers with the Shawnee Mission Summer Enrichment program learning through art, music, technology, science, and theatre, all while having a great time! Fun activities are waiting at Shawnee Mission’s Summer Enrichment program in all of our classes!
The Shawnee Mission Summer Enrichment program offers a variety of classes for children entering grades one through eight in the fall of 2018. Additionally, we have a program designed just for the little ones where students entering pre-k or kindergarten gain a few fundamental school readiness skills. Our program has been successful for over thirty years, with children returning year a er year to enjoy the interaction and stimulation provided by this enrichment format. Our program is also great for working families. Your children can arrive at 7:30 a.m. for early care, take a morning class, eat lunch and play at recess with their new friends, take an afternoon class, and then play some more until 5:30 p.m. in our late care. Your child remains engaged throughout the summer through a variety of activities in a safe and structured environment!
Take a look through our catalog. It is led with all the information you need to select classes and enroll. We look forward to having your child join in the fun at the Shawnee Mission Summer Enrichment program.
