What are Ceramics ?

Ceramic is the name for materials that are formed by the use of heat. The word ceramic comes from the Greek word keramikos. The term covers inorganic, non-metallic materials which are formed by heat.

What Are They Used For ?

Ceramic are used for almost everything. But each of their uses are split into three different categories. Industrial uses, these are things such as lining for a furnace. Structural uses, these are things such as bricks for construction, and rooftop slates. Finally the last one whiteware, these are everyday items such as bath tubs, tea cups and plates that we eat off.

How Are Ancient Ceramics Different To The Ones We Use Now ?

Traditional ceramic raw materials include clay minerals such as kaolinite, whereas more recent materials include aluminium oxide, more commonly known as alumina. The modern ceramic materials, which are classified as advanced ceramics, include silicon carbide and tungsten carbide.
