Family Resources
As we near winter break, the Roosevelt staff wants to make sure all of our families have access to the resources they may need. This is the Oakland County Community Resource Guide, which includes resources about topics including Abuse & Protective Services; Food Pantries, Clothing & Household; Healthcare Services; Housing Assistance; and Parenting & Pregnancy Resources.
211 (United Way) offers resources/connections for family support as well. Parents/adults can call, text, or email. Here is the link to the 211 website, which is searchable by topic. Additionally, see these 211 flyers in English, Spanish, and Arabic.
Finally, here are some resources for Food Pantry/Supplies near WB/Oakland County.
Spelling Bee
December 2023
Dear Roosevelt Families,
We are excited to announce that Roosevelt will be taking part in the Scripp’s National Spelling Bee this school year!!
Sadly, only 5th grade students qualify to advance to the county, state, and national Bees; however, the organization provides materials and information for students beginning in first grade. Roosevelt will have each classroom have their own spelling Bee. Then we will have “Championship Rounds” where the winners from each classroom will compete for a grade level champion. We believe that friendly competitions, like Spelling Bees, offer classroom teachers an opportunity to teach students how to be gracious winners and non-winners. We also feel that spelling is an important communication skill. Spelling bees provide students with multiple opportunities to practice this important life skill. Your child can prepare by learning the words for their grade level: One Bee is for grades 1-3 Two Bee list is for grades 4-5 Three Bee is for grades 6-8 However, you should note that we will go beyond your official grade level list, during the School Bee so we are providing you with all three lists. There are 450 words in all. If you become the 5th grade Champion for our school, you will be provided with a 4,000 word list to prepare for the County-wide Bee. Our classroom Spelling Bees will be completed the week of January 27, 2023, with our school Bee taking place the following week, on Friday, February 3rd. Please let Katlyn LeMere (katlyn.lemere@wbsd.org) know if you have any questions. :) Thank you! Ryan West
Updated Arrival and Dismissal Process
- Arrival and Dismissal traffic will now enter the parking lot off of Orchard Lake Rd.
- Traffic will form (2) lines in-between the school and the bus garage.
- At the end of the long drive (2) lines will need to merge into one line and turn left along the back of the school.
- Families will pick up and drop off students in the same location but now moving in the opposite direction (driving towards Commerce Rd).
- Students will need to exit the car out of the drivers side onto the sidewalk.
- Cars will still be asked to make a right turn only onto Commerce Rd. after dropping off or picking up students.
- Students will be allowed to enter the building at 8:05am from the car line.
- Student dismissal will start at 3:12pm.
- Please continue to wait until 8:00am and/or 3:00pm to enter the arrival and dismissal lines.
I will be out with Orchard Lake Police on Monday the 5th to help support the change in traffic flow. Please be patient as we transition to this new process.
Thank you,
Mr. West
Focus on Student Attendance
We know that there are a wide variety of reasons that students are absent from school, from health concerns to transportation challenges. There are many people in our building prepared to help you if you or your student face challenges in getting to school regularly or on time. We promise to track attendance daily, to notice when your student is missing from class, communicate with you to understand why they were absent, and to identify barriers and supports available to overcome challenges you may face in helping your student attend school.
HOW WE CAN WORK TOGETHER
• Send your child to school unless they are truly sick, such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or a contagious rash.
• Avoid appointments and travel when school is in session.
• Set a regular bedtime and morning routine (including limiting how late your child may use any electronic devices) and finish homework and pack backpacks the night before.
• Have a back-up plan for getting to school in case something comes up (this could be alternative bus routes, roads, or a plan with family members, neighbors, or other parents).
• Communicate with the school about how we can work together to support your child’s attendance.

Roosevelt Elementary 2022-2023 Bell Schedule
Bell Schedule 2021-2022
8:20am-3:12pm
Arrival
The doors will open at 8:10am for the 2022-2023 school year. Due to a lack of adult supervision students will not be allowed in the building until 8:10am.
If students are dropped off prior to 8:10am they will be required to wait outside the building. (Note adult supervision will not be provided prior to 8:10am)
Students will enter the building, go to their locker, and then immediately to class. Staff will be present to greet students at the classroom door starting at 8:10am.
Our goal is to reduce the amount of time students are in the hallways congregating with other students.
Dismissal
This year no students will be allowed to walk home from Roosevelt. All students will need to ride the bus or be car pickup.
Students who are riding the bus will be dismissed at 3:10pm.
Car Line pickup will start at 3:10pm and will dismiss from the Commerce Rd. entrance/exit.
Note: All traffic will be required to turn right onto Commerce Rd. No left turn will be allowed to keep the flow of traffic moving.
Nutrition Services Information
Minimum Online Deposit
The minimum Family Portal cafeteria account deposit has increased to $20.00 due to the increased fees the district is paying for each online deposit. Currently, the credit card processing company recognizes each student account as an individual item, thus making it necessary to deposit $20 into each account. You can get around this by making a deposit into one student account and transferring funds between your children at no charge. We are working with the processing company to see if this can be changed to a total family deposit minimum. We felt that raising the minimum deposit was a better option than passing the fees along to families. We will keep you informed of changes as they occur. Please direct all questions to the Nutrition Services Department at 248.865.6732. Thank you for your understanding.

Roosevelt Visitor Protocol
We're excited to welcome back parent volunteers in the 22-23 school year!
Unscheduled visitors coming to the building will not be permitted to enter past the front office.
Drop-in visitors will not be allowed to enter the building without a pre-scheduled appointment. We will continue this approach in an effort to maximize safety & security while minimizing disruptions to learning.
Families are welcome to schedule in-person meetings with administrators, teachers, counselors, and other staff. These meetings should be scheduled in advance and communicated with the main office. The option to Zoom for meetings will also continue to be available.
Volunteers:
- Must have approval from the principal and teacher before volunteering.
- Interested volunteers must also complete a volunteer form.
- ICHAT background checks are still required for all non-student volunteers.

Title I Services at Roosevelt Elementary
Roosevelt Elementary qualifies as a Title I building. With Title I funding we are able to provide multiple resources to students that support academic success. Some of these resources include but are not limited to,
Intervention support in the areas of reading, writing and math.
Before and after school program
Summer academic programs
Academic resources
This year food services will be providing the opportunity for all students to receive free breakfast but not free lunch. With that being said, I encourage you to still complete the application if you feel you may qualify for services. The amount of Title I funding Roosevelt will receive is based on these percentages.
Free and Reduced Lunch Application
If you have any questions about Title I services provided to students at Roosevelt please feel free to contact Mr. West at ryan.west@wbsd.org.

Middle School Robotics Team
This week the Gator Gears, a WBMS Robotics team, presented their process and their original robot to Mrs. Law's fifth grade class. They shared how important teamwork and problem solving are when being a part of this awesome team. There's a business team who works to advertise and educate others about robotics, a build team who design and build the robot to complete the given tasks, and a coding team who work to tell the robot what to do, via code. It was a wonderful opportunity for our Huskies and for the MS team!!
Once again, I cannot thank you enough for the opportunities you provide for our students. Yesterday was no exception. Giving the Middle School Robotics Team an opportunity to present in front of a class of 5th graders was a perfect opportunity to improve their public speaking, inspire fellow students and internalize their experience this season. It will, without a doubt, help them as they prepare for their competition this weekend.
The 5th graders were magnificent. They were exceptionally attentive and very polite and careful with the robot. You are amazing!
Thank you Mr. West and Ms. Jennings for all you do in supporting all of the enrichment programs in our school district
Sincerely,
Tony Mathew
