Second Street Superstars
by Makiya M.
No 8th graders were nominated this week. Can you think of a deserving student?
7th Grade Superstar: Margaret W.
6th Grade Superstar: Aiden J.
Mrs. Snipes nominated Aiden and said, "Aiden embodies what it means to be kind and considerate of others. He will never put himself in the spotlight, but he deserves the recognition! Aiden works hard outside of school to pay for medical school in the future with his own mowing business. In the classroom, he comes to school each day ready to do his best. He notices the quiet students, the new students, the students who sit off on the sidelines and is a friend to them. Aiden is a true display of positive character."

Careers: Advertising Sales Agent
by Rebecca V.
What do you want to be when you grow up? What’s your major going to be in college? What will your career be?
These are the only questions that adults seem to be able to ask. And, although it does seem irritating, deciding on your career is likely one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. But many students only know about a handful of careers.
Over the next few weeks, I intend to cover several different careers, both common careers and relatively unknown careers. Below I’ve inserted a poll. Please take it. I’ll use the data I collect from that to write next weeks article.
This week’s career: Advertising Sales Agent
How do potential clients find advertisers? Through advertising sales agents. Essentially, these are the people that do the advertising for advertisers. They find potential clients, present sales, and maintain client-business relations. According to MyMajors.com, some of the most important skills necessary for this career are social perceptiveness (“Being aware of others reactions and understanding why they react as they do”), persuasion, time management, critical thinking, and writing, among other things. Being an advertising agent is an extremely professional job, but it does come with professional pay. The average annual income for an advertising sales agent is $63,660. The national average is $56,516. Although it’s not an enormous difference, most adults would tell you that it is definitely worth it.
It’s not for everyone. Becoming an advertising sales agent does not require any more education than a high school diploma, although a bachelor's degree in selling skills and sales operations would get you hired by a better company.
So, do you want to be an advertising sales agent? Have you ever heard of this job before? I know that I haven’t. Please vote in the poll for next week and stay tuned for next weeks edition.

Opinion: Should Second Street School start later?
by Rebecca V.
It’s no secret that Second Street School starts earlier than many schools. With a starting time of around 7:30, Second Street falls well below the national average of 8:03 A.M. (cdc.gov). Many students at Second Street wish that the school day began just a bit later so that students could sleep in a little longer. Second Street School ought to move the start time of school because students need more sleep than they are currently getting, they need to sleep more in order to pay better attention in school, and not getting enough sleep poses a serious health risk for many students.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, preschoolers (3-5) need 10-13 hours of sleep (although they have naps, so their sleep times are slightly disrupted), school-age children (6-13) need 9-11 hours of sleep, and teenagers (14-17) need 8-10 hours. There is simply not enough time in the day for these students to get the sleep that they need. If every student wakes up at 6:30 AM, preschoolers would need to fall asleep 5:30 PM (although, if you factor in a two-hour nap it would work out to be more like 8:30 PM). School-age children would need to fall asleep at 7:30 PM, teenagers would need to fall asleep at 8:30. Obviously, that is not going to happen, and, particularly for the older students, 10:00 PM is a much more likely bedtime (although many stay up much later) That only gives students the bare minimum of sleep they need for the day, and a large number of students do fall asleep after 10 PM and wake up before 6:30. There is simply not enough time in the day for these students to get the amount of sleep they need. Personally, I fall asleep at around 10:00 PM and wake up at 6 AM. That gives me exactly 8 hours, the minimum requirement for sleep for teenagers. All students need to sleep for an adequate amount of time, and for many students, the weekend is the only time when they can sleep a healthy amount.
Second Street School students often have trouble paying attention in class, and while this is an issue that plagues all schools, there is a simple fix to at least part of the issue. Studies have shown that when students get more sleep, they can focus more. According to a publication by Brigham Young University, lost sleep accumulates over time. For example, if a student got a half hour less than what they need every night, by the end of a two week period, they would feel as if they had lost 7 hours of sleep the previous night. Another article published in the Journal of Nature and Science of Sleep stated that college students who slept nine hours or more had an average GPA of 3.24 whereas students who slept less than six hours had an average of 2.74. Obviously, the goal of a school is for students to reach academic success, and starting school later is a simple way to greatly improve both behaviors in class and academic performance.
According to an article by the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, teenagers who don’t get enough sleep are at greater risk for obesity, diabetes, accidents, depression, and suicidal thoughts. While many of these do fall on the extreme side of the spectrum, there are certainly many students who do suffer from such a lack of sleep that these may very well be a reality. An article by the Center for Disease Control, students who suffer from a lack of sleep are more likely to use drugs or smoke. Additionally, although this does not apply to middle-schoolers when a tired person is driving, there is an extremely higher risk of crashing. This doesn’t apply to middle-schoolers, but the risk that early school start times put high-schoolers and teachers in is enormous. If not to bring up academic success, the start times of schools ought to be later to improve students’ health.
It is my belief that Second Street School should push back the start time to 8:00 AM. Other studies do show that starting school too late is not a good idea, but 8:00 AM? We can handle that. Yes, school would run until 3:00 instead of 2:30, but I would personally go a bit later than start school earlier. If school started even just 30 minutes later, students health and grades would be impacted tremendously, and we may even find that student behavior begins to improve. So, I send out a plea to

Springtime
The lemon in the sky rises above the horizon The moon shoved back into hiding As the dew on the tulips begins to glide towards the kelly green grass The scent of honeysuckles begins to ascend into the atmosphere The baby birds have roused from their slumber As the wind gently runs its hands through its silky sepia feathers A child clothed in plush pajamas hastened towards their front door, The chipped ruby red paint plunging to the ground The child galloped to the sopping grass As she let the sun tenderly kiss her face When she proclaimed to the world “It’s here, it’s here! My favorite season of the year!”

Part 2: "Brace For Impact"
by Eli C. and Jack G.
Gage settled his feet on the sandy ground. It pushed in on itself and shifted. He looked at his brother, unconscious and looked back into the atmosphere. He decided that he needed to test the air. He was hesitant because if he couldn’t breathe and not fast enough to put his helmet back on he would die. Noises from the forest erupted like singing birds but screeching noises. They were distant, but still, they were there. His eyes darted from the discolored trees and ocean.
Hesitation gripped him as his hands shook and crept up to the side of his helmet. He felt the edge of the button to open the plastic in front of the helmet. His breath stuck to the clear, smudged plastic. He sucked in one final bit of oxygen and let it out before pushing in the button.
He couldn’t breathe. Gage reached for breath but he couldn’t. His hand trembled as he tried to cover the button. The delicate touch of the button lied right in the center of his index finger. Blurry. Everything was getting blurry. The screeching animals seemed shaky and rung with intensity. That’s when he pushed the button and the helmet was back on, but he had already lost too much breath and wobbled around. He looked back to Edvin and crashed into unconsciousness.
Edvin woke up shaky. The pod was shut tightly and Gage was missing. Edvin picked up the other suit wondering if Gage was outside. He glanced out the window and saw the purple trees and the green ocean. When he got his suit on he stepped out into the planet and saw Gage lying down unconscious.
“Oh no,” Edvin whispered under his breath running over and collapsing over top of Gage. His hand moved to his neck to check for a pulse and was happy to find that there was. He looked and needed to either get back in the pod or make a fire.

Panthers Golf 2019
by Ellie B.
Golf Season is on it’s way!!! The Frankfort Golf Team would be glad to have you on their team!!! All 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders be ready to join the team!!! Our coach is Mr. Rodgers, a social studies teacher from Frankfort High School.
Golf is an amazing sport that anyone can play with practice. If you aren't sure if golf is your thing, go to Lakeview golf course and rent some clubs to see if you like it. If you find that you like it, you will need to get a set of golf clubs before you start, as well as some balls, and tees. Golf is a great opportunity to play on a team, but also to become better as an individual.
Big Blue Nation
There are many college basketball teams that should be number one, but one team sticks out the most. That one team is your very own, Kentucky Wildcats.
The Kentucky has a team that comes ready to play at practice and games every single day whether they are at home or on the road, they are always ready for battle. They have one of the best small forwards in the country Keldon Johnson and a player who is arguably the best Kentucky basketball player of all time, P.J Washington. Kentucky is 16-1 at home which is the best home record in the SEC.
Kentucky is supposed to get a number one seed in the March Madness. If they are number one, they will play at home for half the tournament, which will be a big advantage.
Game Review: Warframe
by Anthony P.
Warframe is a game in which the player will start out with a choice of what “warframe” you’re gonna choose and these “warframe” have different abilities like one has electric abilities another one has abilities of magnets. In this game, you collect materials and build different weapons and other warframes. You go around different planets collecting different resources and get new parts for you to build warframes. You level up in a system called “Mastery Rank” and then you can build stronger weapons to fight your enemies with.
There also is a system called the market and you can buy stuff with credits which is the currency in the game. Another currency in the game called platinum, which is used to easily advance in the game it is the premium currency which means you buy it or from trade. The trading system you collect parts called prime parts which make better weapons and better warframes and other rare objects you mostly use platinum to trade for these things or you can sell stuff for platinum.
The way you can get prime parts is to use a thing called prime relics and there are different types of relics good from bad and the better ones give you better parts for rarer weapons or warframes. Mods are items are used to upgrade a warframe or weapon and can be upgraded. The way you upgrade mods is a thing called endo and this material is obtained by finding these statues and selling them or by using other mods. I would have to give this game an 8/10 the reason because it is really fun and enjoying once you first start playing but then the game gets boring in the late game.

***Disclaimer: These are MY opinions. Please do not get offended by my remarks.
News:
WR Antonio Brown is having trouble getting along with the Pittsburgh Steelers and QB Ben Roethlisberger The two have been in a love-hate relationship for a long time now. The Steelers’ owner, Rooney Family, sat down with the first loser of the hit show “The Masked Singer” and they both agreed, it’s time to move on. A couple of weeks ago, the wide receiver said that he wanted to be a San Francisco 49ers. However, other sources, are saying that he wants to be on the Cleveland Browns. The Eagles released QB Nick Foles. The 2018 Super Bowl MVP asked for a franchise and the Eagles denied. The QB will become a free agent until further notice.
Opinion:
Antonio Brown is a great football player. I like the Steelers. It is sad that he will probably leave however, it is reasonable. I just don’t understand what Ben Roethlisberger did to him. Big Ben is a great person and player. Anyway, the Eagles have made the dumbest move in years I believe. They make Carson Wentz their starting QB every season even though Nick Foles is better. Every time the Eagles put in Nick Foles they go on a winning streak. And I don’t think that he was asking for too much either. I like Nick Foles and he is a great player. He needs to go to a team that will value his talent. The Eagles just don’t do that and that is not what Foles deserves.

Advice from Miss Knows a Lot and Miss Helping Hands
Dear Miss Helping Hands,
I am going to go to a conference where I have to do a lot of public speaking. I am worried that I will mumble and mess up in my speaking up. Please help!!!!!!
Dear Anxious,
I think I know what conference you are talking about and I have been there and experienced that fear/worry. It is a little scary and I worried about mumbling too but I will say once you get up there, there is a little bit a fear but not as much as when you had to stand and wait until your turn. Make sure the microphone is adjusted to your hight a speak directly into it. If you are scared that a lot of people are looking at you just make eye contact with the people you are talking to specifically. If you stumble that is okay because a lot of these people you will never see again. After that just quickly recover from it and say the word that you stumbled on. I hope you have fun at the conference you are going to. You will do great, I promise. If you are going to the conference I think you are, it is a great experience and is just great all together. I hope this helped you and made you feel better.
Sincerely,
Miss Helping Hand
