Weekly Update

Dear Families,

Last week was a tough week for the U-46 community as we endured the loss of two South Elgin High School students. Please keep their families, teachers, coaches, friends, etc. in your thoughts.

This week, we had numerous students participating in the "spicy chip challenge," resulting in students vomiting and seeking medical attention. Please do not do this challenge, it has not ended well for anyone.

A few reminders:

- If your student needs an early dismissal, a parent or guardian must sign the student out through the main office. You do not need to call the office in advance.

-Students who ride the bus, may only ride their assigned route.

-Students must wear their ID all day at school.

-Students are not allowed to wear hats.

Please take a moment to review this newsletter as there is important information and dates about upcoming events. Also, please note that EVMS is continuing to hire for paraprofessionals, AVID tutors, and hall monitors. Should you or someone you know are interested, please fill out the on-line application.

From the Nurse's Office

All medications should be provided to the Nurse as students are not allowed to carry medications in their backpacks unless it has been cleared with the Nurse. If your child carries an emergency medication such as an inhaler or epinephrine please contact Nurse Jamie to ensure she is aware and the proper forms are on file.

There has been a large volume of sports physicals turned in and the Nurse is diligently working to ensure all are entered for the students. The Nurse will inform coaches of individual players who do not have a valid physical on file. Any student looking to participate in a sport should have a valid sports or annual physical on file at the time of try-outs.

Thank you

PSAT 8

Date of PSAT 8

October 18th, 2023

General Information:

The PSAT 8 assessment will help your student prepare for the future. By

taking the PSAT 8, your student will learn which skills they need to work on for

continued success through high school and in college and career. In addition, the

PSAT 8 will identify areas where your student excels and may want to consider

taking higher-level courses. PSAT 8 scores are not sent to colleges.

What is the PSAT 8?

The PSAT 8/9 is an assessment given to 8th and

9th graders that is closely aligned to the SAT®,

PSAT/NMSQT®, and PSATTM 10. It consists of questions

in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and in Math.

What are the benefits of PSAT 8?

It helps establish a baseline for students as they enter

high school and begin preparing for college and career.

How Should my student prepare?

The best preparation is to deeply engage in classroom

learning and practicing skills over time. It will also help if

they get plenty of sleep the night before test day.

What if my student doesn’t know the answer?

If a student doesn’t know the answer to a question,

they should take their best guess. There’s no penalty

for wrong answers.

How long will the PSAT take and how many questions are there?

Actual testing time is 2 hours and 25 minutes. There

are 42 Reading Test questions, 40 Writing and

Language Test questions, and 38 Math Test questions.

Students will prepare for this event by engaging in lessons provided by SchoolLinks. The lessons will engage students in career pathways based on their current interests and future goals. On the day of the event, students will be bussed to the NOW Arena to tour career showcase exhibits provided by local businesses, industries, governmental organizations, and nonprofits. These exhibits will be paired with U-46 programs that can prepare students for these opportunities. Cell Phone Policy

CELL PHONES SHOULD BE AWAY FOR THE DAY!

All middle schools in the district will be following the district guidelines of "AWAY FOR THE DAY" for cell phone usage. Students will not be allowed to use their cell phones during the school day, including during lunch, in the locker room or bathrooms. These district-wide middle school guidelines support classroom learning and improved culture and climate efforts for all middle school students in order to minimize distractions and help teachers create and manage a classroom and school environment conducive to learning, discussion and collaboration. It also helps protect students against bullying and/or inappropriate social media use during school hours, which are often exacerbated by cell phone access.

In accordance with our secondary cell phone guidelines, students are expected to put their silenced or powered-off cell phone in their locker upon arriving at school. Our intention is to help students create better habits when in learning environments. If students are unable to keep devices out of sight and in their lockers, teachers may provide a warning and remind/ask their students to put the phone away in their lockers or cell phone holders until the end of the period. If students do not comply and continue to engage in electronic device misuse, progressive discipline procedures will be followed. This may include, but is not limited to, the following consequences: having the student turn over his/her phone to the main office for parent pick up, or issuance of referrals resulting in detentions and other discipline-related interventions.

Parents - If you need to get a hold of your student during the day, please call the main office at 630-213-5550 and we will either relay your message or bring your student to the main office for you to speak to them directly.

School Attendance

Student attendance is critical in learning. If students are not present, then they miss instruction. Strong attendance has a proven impact on school success. Chronic absence — missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused, unexcused absences and suspensions, can translate into third-graders unable to master reading, sixth-graders failing subjects and ninth-graders dropping out of high school.

Of course, we understand students become ill and may not be able to attend school. In those instances, parents must inform the school of their student's absence. You can call 630-213-5550 or email eastviewattendance@u-46.org

We expect students to be in attendance every day and ready to learn!

School Meals

U-46 will again offer breakfast and lunch meals at no cost to all U-46 students. Monthly menus are available at the link below.
