Fifth Grade NSE
Reading
In September, fifth graders have been hard at work taking charge of their reading to become POWERFUL readers! We have been monitoring our reading, setting goals, and making wise book choices as we have started the year. One of the most important skills we have been developing is inferring by paying attention to details in our texts.
And don't forget, students are expected to be reading at home and logging what they read. They all have just-right books from classroom libraries or the school library, so there's no excuse :-)
Writing
Fifth graders are diving into our first major area of study with our personal narratives. We have been generating lists of topics to write about and are beginning to narrow our focus on one that we take to publish. We will be planning, organizing, and pacing our stories in the coming weeks.
Math
With our new Bridges math resource, students have begun by focusing on multiplication (factors and multiples), volume and surface area, and the associative and commutative properties. So basically, a LOT. Students do have weekly homework to practice at home. Feel free to share ANY strategies that you have with them, and feel free to ask us ANY questions that you might have that we can help you with.
Science
Students started the year by attempting many challenges, from using a sheet paper to stack books to stacking marshmallows with spaghetti. With everything we do, we're thinking like scientists and using the scientific method to investigate problems. We're turning our focus to the solar system and the many mysteries that it holds!
Social Studies
In Social Studies, students have been learning about the Constitution and our government. We've learned about everything from the Constitutional Convention to the three branches and the separation of powers. Up next we'll be looking at the early history of the "three worlds" colliding.
