Origin
It was invented in England by John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich. It was invented because he was gambling and did not want to leave his table to take dinner, so he had someone bring him dinner that he could eat with one hand.
Catergories
There are four main types of sandwiches. Cut sandwiches are normally made from square sectioned loaves and are then filled and cut into squares or triangles. Open sandwiches are often on flat breads and are made with one piece of bread and topped. Rolled sandwiches are tortillas or pita bread filled with meats and other toppings. Filled loaves are smaller loaves of bread cut open and filled.
