NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
Term 3 Week 4 : 13 August
This weekend is a very significant time for many of our children as they receive Jesus Sacramentally at their First Eucharist Mass. I know the children are very excited and have been well prepared by their teachers for their very special day and I look forward to joining with Year 4M on Saturday afternoon at 4.00pm and Year 4P on Sunday at midday to celebrate. Fr Quynh has told us that more family members than initially thought (now a total of eight) will be able to attend to support the children which will make the event even more special. Please continue to keep all of the children, their families and their teachers in your prayers.
CONGRATULATIONS!
This morning our Year Three classes and the School Choir recorded their performances for the Catholic Schools’ Festival of Performing Arts. Both groups sang beautifully, and we will now submit our recordings for feedback from the adjudicators. A bonus this year is that, as we needed to record the performances for submission, families will receive a link in the near future so that they may view the children’s wonderful efforts. Thank you to Mr Loiacono and Mrs Evans and the class teachers, Mrs Pethick and Miss Horne, for preparing the children so well.
ASSEMBLY
Tomorrow’s performance Assembly will be presented by Mr Seers’ Year 5P class. We are all looking forward to seeing what innovative items they come up with to entertain us.
SCHOOL PHOTOS
Please see the information from Mrs Bradshaw regarding the School Photos which will be taken next Tuesday 18 August and Wednesday 19 August. Please also note the day of your children’s class photo and ensure that they are wearing their full winter uniform, including their tie.
INTERSCHOOL SPORT
After a very impressive performance by all of our teams last Friday we are excited about the return fixture against St Maria Goretti’s school tomorrow. I wish our Netball, Soccer and AFL players the very best of luck as they attempt to pull off a clean sweep of all events.

YEAR 3 CLASS NEWS
HASS
In HASS this term we have been learning about Aboriginal culture and history. We discovered that Aboriginal people use symbols to tell stories. We drew some common Aboriginal symbols to create our own stories. We have really enjoyed learning about the ways that Aboriginal people have communicated and passed their stories and traditions down from their ancestors. We are all looking forward to our excursion in Week 6 to the Perth Hills Discovery Centre, where we will get to experience more about Aboriginal culture.
LITERACY
In Aboriginal culture, traditions and beliefs are passed down through storytelling. We have enjoyed reading Dreaming stories that tell about how the world came to be. We have then had a go at writing our own Dreaming stories and we have loved listening to everyone’s creative ideas.
RELIGION
In Religion we have been focussing on Baptism and how when people are baptised they become a member of the Family of God. We have looked at the important symbols of Baptism, including water, charism oil, candles and white garments. Each of us are created with a soul which is a sign of God’s love for us and know that God cares and loves us each individually. We have enjoyed bringing in our Baptism photos and looking at how cute everyone was.
MATHS
In maths we have been working very hard to learn our times tables. We play games such as ‘Splat’, ‘Hit the Button’ and ‘Speed Maths’ to increase our fluency. Some students are progressing very quickly to achieve their ninja belts which they receive when they master a specific table.
CHOIR
Today we recorded two songs that will be entered into the Catholics Schools' Festival of Performing Arts. The songs titled ‘Though We Are Many’ and ‘The Supper of the Lord’. We have been working extremely hard this term to learn the words and perform them with gusto!

INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY - Thursday 30 July
On Thursday, 30 July, selected students from Years 4-6 represented Notre Dame at the annual Interschool Cross Country Carnival held at Tomato Lake Reserve. It was a fast turn around for our students from our own carnival but they all came in really eager to improve from last year’s result and gave their best for the school. I will say our interschool cluster group is one of the toughest in the cross country field with two new schools, Saint Maria Goretti's Primary School and Salvado Catholic College joining us for their first carnival.
We were blessed with fantastic weather and great parent support the whole day. A big mention to our Year 4 group who put in consistently high places in both the boys and girls categories. Well done to Isla McGruddy who placed 4th in her race. Overall, there was a big improvement in consistency of places this year across all year levels and all students should be proud of their efforts. This year was again dominated by St Emilie’s who took out their third win in a row! Notre Dame improved on last year's effort coming in 5th placed in a highly contested meet.
Well done to all schools on their efforts and the fantastic sportsmanship shown throughout the day. Many thanks go to Mrs Chua, Mrs Boyle, Brother Stephen and Mrs Davidson who helped with various duties on the day. I’d also like to thank the parents for taking their kids to training on various mornings. Thank you to Miss Fimmano for her assistance during these sessions. We will always strive to improve and hopefully not have as many disruptions next time around. Well done Notre Dame!
SMG FRIENDLY - Friday 7 August
Last Friday, Year 6 students participated in some friendly sport matches against St Maria Goretti's Primary School (SMG). These sports were Soccer, AFL and Netball. We were originally meant to play SMG as part of the Eagles Cup competition in Term 2 which unfortunately had to be cancelled. It was great to be able to verse SMG in some friendly competitive games.
The Year 6 group were really excited for the opportunity and came in well prepared for the games. It was fantastic to see so much parent support at both Miles Park and Kooyong and we look forward to this Friday’s last match again

REMEMBERING OUR VETERANS
This Saturday, 15 August 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific Day (VP Day) and the end of the Second World War. VP Day is commemorated each year in Australia and around the world.
For information about the history surrounding the day click on the following link: https://anzacportal.dva.gov.au
With some 12000 Second World War veterans still alive today it is encouraged, by the Minister of Veterans’ Affairs Australia, for all Australians to observe this important commemorative date.
The students have had an opportunity to learn about our Veterans and the importance of paying their respects towards them.

EARLY YEARS LEARNING FRAMEWORK
Belonging, Being and Becoming – the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) describes the principles, practices and outcomes that support and enhance young children’s learning from birth to five years of age, as well as their transition to school.
The framework is a key component of the National Quality Framework for early childhood education and care. The EYLF was developed by the Australian and state and territory governments with input from the early childhood sector and early childhood academics.
The framework offers a vision where 'all children experience learning that is engaging and builds success for life'.
