Meet Our New Staff
Please join us in welcoming the following staff to NSE this year:
Mr. Bernard Wilson, Student Support Coach. In previous years, Mrs. Deb Mitchell was a behavior aide in the building. She retired at the end of last school year. We were able to expand this role in the building this year and hire a certified teacher. Mr. Wilson has 15+ years of experience teaching and working in an elementary school. Mr. Wilson will help support students behaviorally, socially, emotionally, etc. in the classroom, on the bus, at recess and lunch, as well as monitoring attendance. We are excited about this opportunity and having Mr. Wilson join our NSE staff in order to support the whole child.
Mrs. Joy Thorpe, Math Specialist. We are excited to welcome Joy to NSE! Joy previously worked as a Math Aide at Bailey Lake. As our Math Specialist, Joy is also a certified teacher and will assist and supervise the math interventions taking place in the building.
Heather Buschman, 4th Grade Classroom Aide. This year due to the higher class sizes in our 4th grade classrooms, we were able to hire a full-time classroom aide to be shared between the two 4th grade classrooms. Mrs. Buschman has previous school experience assisting in classrooms. She will also be our afternoon crossing guard!
We currently have a Math Aide position open 5-6 hours/day. If interested and for information on qualifications, please contact our Main Office at (248) 623-4100.

Leadership Updates
During the months of September and October, we have been working to create and develop our classroom communities. This includes sharing about ourselves, our strengths, and talents, as well as our goals. Students in Grades K- 2 are being asked to reflect on the “Best Part of Me” and students in Grades 3-5 will be thinking toward the future, “I Am Going to Be”. These reflections culminate as students work to craft their personal mission statement for the year.
Additionally, we will have held (at the time of this newsletter printing) our student elections. The whole school will participate in voting for our 5th Grade Class Officers as well as selecting a classroom representative to be part of the Student Leadership Team.
By the end of October, classrooms will have selected their school job. Students can choose to help with shelving books, stacking chairs after events, helping to clean up outside, etc. These are all ways that students can actively contribute to making NSE a great place to learn!
Last, each grade level will be contributing their influence, ideas, and creativity by creating one bulletin board display in the hallway leading to the cafeteria, planning one Den Meeting, and planning/sharing ideas for their scheduled Classroom Parties! We are continuing to look for ways to empower students as leaders by incorporating their voices into our daily routines and operations!
