Alpha Pi Chapter - April 2014

Letter from the Philanthropy Chairwoman

On March 5th, we held a very successful letter writing campaign, Sincerely Yours. It was such a fun night with snacks, hanging out with sisters and watching “Frozen.” About 3,000 letters were written that night and were sent back to the ALSAC office with our St. Jude representative, Lisa. On March 24th, we were informed that we had already raised $8,000 from Sincerely Yours. On April 4th, one month after the event, we were informed that we have raised $21,932 from Sincerely Yours! As philanthropy chairs, we couldn’t be any happier!

This past weekend, we held our annual Flapjack Attack on Saturday from 11am-3pm. We had 12 co-sponsors and the College Park Volunteer Fire Department and FIJI helped put on the event. With over 500 tickets sold, more sold at the door and a raffle that had many great items, we surpassed our goal and raised over $5,500!

I am happy to say that from this school year alone (2013-2014), the Alpha Pi chapter has raised over $56,000 for the kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital! Thank you for all you have done to help us achieve these goals.

Delta Love,

Carli Smith

Greek Week 2014

During the week of April 6-12, the women of Tri Delta are paired up with the men of Phi Delta Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Phi Delta Sigma for the annual Greek Week festivities. During this week, we work with the other members in our matchup to compete in athletics, package food that will be distributed around the DC area, perform a skit compiled by the women in our chapter, paint a recycling dumpster, and participate in Greek Olympics.

Athletics include soccer and basketball and we are thrilled to have such strong athletes competing on our teams. This year, we are working with Terps Against Hunger to package packets of food that are nutritionally balanced and are distributed to people who may struggle to afford sustainable meals. Each year our skit is led by some of the talented women who have been on the dance team or who have a history of dance and choreography. The dumpster painting competition is a great way to show Greek pride and adds some excitement to the ordinarily plain green dumpsters around campus. At the end of the week, the points that each matchup receives form the events throughout the week are tallied up and the Greek Week committee determines a winner!

Greek Week has always been a great way for newly initiated members to get involved with the chapter and get to know some of the older women even better. We are all very excited to be a part of Greek Week as it is a great way for us to meet new members of the Greek community and to contribute to the greater Maryland and DC community!

Terp Thon

For Terp Thon, all of our new members stepped up and worked really hard to not only raise money for the event but dance throughout the entire day! They were helping paint signs for our team, coming together with other members of the Greek community and really participated in the activities at Terp Thon such as dancing and were just having a great time. Katie Sanquist, our VP of Public Relations, said she was so proud of them for getting so involved in something that is so close to our philanthropy. We are also happy to say that Greek Life alone raised $299,869.82 which is 69.9% of the overall total, but Tri Delta was the 2nd best Greek fundraising match up with Zeta Psi and raised $25,020.64!!
