High School Specialty Program Information

What is a specialty program?

Specialty programs focus on career exploration, subject area concentration, and college/university preparation. Prince William County Public Schools provide excellent opportunities for students to explore a wide variety of special programs in our schools. These “specialty” programs give students the chance to investigate careers ranging from the various building trades to advanced computer science. Students participating in these programs can earn certifications, licenses, or other professional credentials in an area of study.

TELL ME MORE!

Eighth-grade students and their parents are invited to investigate the variety of specialty programs available to students as high school options. Two general information sessions in October introduce all special opportunity programs available at the high school level and offer an overview of the application process. In addition, information sessions will also be held for each high school to allow students to explore the program further. In the past, these information nights were held at the high schools to allow for a site visit. You can always explore the information provided on the PWCS website for high school specialty programs found here.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES

In order to apply for a specialty program, all students must complete an application. Applications are required for students residing within a school boundary as well as for students who transfer for a program.

Applications for students applying for the Center for Fine and Performing Arts at Colgan High School are due Monday, December 7, 2020. Auditions for all areas of concentration will be held in January 2021. Dates will be posted as soon as they are available.

For all other programs, the application is due February 1.

Applications will become available here on November 1, 2020

What to look out for next

Every year, Parkside school counselors visit 8th grade social studies classes twice: once in mid to late October to discuss information in regards to the specialty programs, including what programs are offered at each high school and what those programs are even about, as well as due dates and how we can help with the application process. Then we come back in early January to talk about being prepared for the transition to high school including scheduling for your courses.

We LOVE coming into the classes to talk to you. This year it will look a little different so we will be asking you all to do a little research before hand. Take a look at the websites above and start to think about why you feel that these programs may or may not be something you are interested in. We will be working with social studies teachers to come and spend the class with you exploring all about this amazing opportunity that Prince William County offers to students. We will be posting a discussion board in Canvas to get the wheels going and awarding house points for those of you who are participating!

We can wait to see your faces!
