ELA - Mrs. Murphy
We are currently in Unit 2 of StudySync. This unit is about the past and present, and what shapes our identity. As we form bonds with other people and our communities over time, we realize that experiences from our past shape who we are in the present.
This unit will primarily consist of a novel study: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. This was my favorite book when I was in middle school, so I am very excited to share it with my students. We will also read and analyze several other texts throughout the unit including... Commencement Address to the Santa Fe Indian School, Abuela Invents the Zero, Inside Out and Back Again, Theories of Time and Space, and The Road Not Taken.
You will find a brief summary of my lesson plans for this week below.
Email is the best way to contact me if you have any questions about your student's progress in my class. I am happy to help!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Murphy
ELA - Mr. Russell
About Me: I am an 8th grade language arts teacher. I am excited to have the opportunity to get to work with the students, parents, and other teachers on Team 10! This will be my 7th year teaching at Junction City Middle School, but my second year teaching 8th grade! I graduated from Kansas State University. I love coffee, tea, and jazz. My favorite hobbies are reading, writing, listening to music, and playing video games. My wife also works at JCMS as a 7th grade language arts teacher.
This week we finished reading the short story "The Lottery" and began planning for our end of unit test and writing project. We will have our Unit 1 test in class on Tuesday, October 11 with retake opportunities throughout the week. We will also be writing our own original suspenseful narratives using the concepts that we have learned throughout the unit to attempt to achieve suspense.
See the picture below for the agenda of activities & homework from the previous week of school.

Please Don't Be Absent!
Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success—both in school and in life. When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behavior and have a better chance of graduating from high school.
When students are absent for fewer days, their grades and reading skills often improve—even among those students who are struggling in school. Students who attend school regularly also feel more connected to their community, develop important social skills and friendships, and are significantly more likely to graduate from high school, setting them up for a strong future.
But when kids are absent for an average of just two days of school per month—even when the absences are excused– it can have a negative impact. As a parent, you can prepare your child for a lifetime of success by making regular school attendance a priority.
