SCHOOL NUTRITION NEWSLETTER
Message from the Director
When I think back thirty plus years ago, I didn't know that my purpose was anything other than raising my children. While that was and is my primary purpose, I learned that I had a passion for helping all children. It is rewarding when your passion allows you to give and work with empathy. In our profession, it is sometimes easy to forget the impact we have on our students. You not only feed them, but often it's the most nutritious food they receive all day. Your smile and kindness may be the thing that lifts up a student. It may be easy to forget that close to 1 in 3 elementary students qualifies for free or reduced price meals. It may be easy to forget that 1 in 10 students has a food allergy or special diet. It may be easy to forget that children are at an all time high risk for mental illness and suicide. It may be easy to forget that some children are experiencing sexual or physical abuse. It may be easy to forget that the child you are serving is homeless. It may be easy to forget that you, too, were once a child. Keep your heart centered in your purpose and know that you are doing the most noble work of all. I know that for some of our kids, YOU are the highlight of their day. Don't forget to use your passion to let Congress know how important free meals for all students are. Click on the link in this newsletter and quickly send a pre-written email to your legislators. It's 30 seconds of easiness and every voice matters. You can do this more than once. I send an email every day.
With gratitude,
Kathy
