SY23 CWFDES FAMILY ISSUE #40
Dear Aviator Families,
One week of summer has come and gone! I hope you are enjoying some rest, relaxation and fun with your families. Duke Elementary has a different feel since the students' last day on Friday and the teachers' last day on Wednesday; the hallways are missing the cheerful vibes that they bring.
I would like to take this time to thank our students and families for a great school year and your unwavering support helping your child at home with extra practice, volunteering, and/or showing your appreciation. Thank you for sharing your children with us each day.
I look forward to August 23rd and another amazing school year ahead.
Enjoy the sunshine and time with your loved ones. I hope you're able to do all the things that bring you joy this summer.
Please join me in welcoming our newest Aviators!
Ms. Kelly O'Grady - Special Education
Ms. Rachel Boarman - 5th Grade Math/Science
Ms. Kaitlyn Wood - 2nd Grade Teacher
Summer Learning Opportunities
There are opportunities for Summer Learning for all students in SMCPS. Please visit this website to see the options. There are packets from any grade level that families can print at home to work on. There are also learning activities in Schoology. All this information is on the site linked above. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Snyder at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Moving this Summer?
If you are moving to a new school or out of state, please email our front office secretary, Stephanie Magill (email@example.com) by the end of the year. This will help give her time to get your student's records together and it will also help with the laptop shuffle. Thank you!
Congratulations to our 5th Grade Aviators!
Below you will find the 5th Grade videos that were featured in the Duke Morning News during the last week of school. Please enjoy! For a better resolution video, you will need to download rather than preview.

Health Department Clinics Announced
If your child will continue in a school in SMCPS, his/her meal account will remain active at the beginning of the 2023-24 school year. This means that the account balance will transfer to the new school year (positive or negative).
If you are moving and your child has a balance due, please make arrangements to make a payment before requesting his/her records.
If your child has money on the account, you can request a refund of the balance by completing a simple survey. HERE IS THE LINK.
Please keep in mind that free/reduced price meal applications must be completed annually to determine continued access to this benefit.
Registration for the 23-2024 School Year
Students who attended Duke in Grades K - 5 through the end of this school year will be automatically rolled into the next grade level. This will also apply to students who are zoned for Duke and attended Pre-K at an SMCPS designated school.
Any person who has a child who meets the age requirement (4 years old on/before September 1, 2023) is invited to submit an application for the SMCPS Pre-K program. This is a full-day program offered to families who meet income eligibility standards. Applicants must provide proof of residency and income eligibility documentation.
Please encourage your neighbors and friends with age-eligible children to investigate this option early. Details about the program and selection process can be found on the SMCPS Website.
Registration for the 2023-24 school year is now OPEN. Under Maryland law, children must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2023, to enter kindergarten in the 2023-2024 school year. (DOB on/before September 1, 2018)
All new-student registrations:
New Student Registration information (and forms) can be found on the SMCPS Student Registration webpage.
If your residence has changed and you are no longer residing within the Duke Elementary school boundaries, you must register your child at the correct school assignment. Click HERE to find a school by your address.
