From the Principal

Dear FMS Families,

This past month has brought much excitement to FMS! With the introduction of optional masking, we are now seeing many smiling faces every day. Warmer weather (here and there) has been welcomed and students are enjoying recess outside. As a school, we have enjoyed some community-building through our second One School, One Book experience, which you'll read about below. We are also working on "catching" our school community members following school rules, and continue to celebrate those good deeds on the morning announcements and showing the results on a graph in the cafeteria.

Fourth and fifth graders have begun SBAC testing, and the third grade will test after April break. Students have worked hard all year, and this is just one measure of success. Please encourage your student to consider it a way to show their learning, rather than something to worry about.

Now that we no longer have to navigate strict COVID protocols, we are looking forward to planning a family open house in May. We will let you know when that is scheduled and how you can participate!

Also, please look in your email next week for a letter next week that will explain the placement process.

Anytime, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions. I am so glad to be staying in the role of Principal next year and look forward to continued collaboration with families.

In March, we had our second One School, One Book experience with the book I Am Every Good Thing by Derrick Barnes and Gordon James. Each class read the book, and then did some reflective work about who they are - extending their understanding of identity. Each student made their own identity mirror, which represents all the different ways we are all unique. We look forward to another One School, One Book experience in May.

Jason Chin author visit

The PTO sponsored a special two-day author visit on March 10 and 11 in the FMS Library. In the weeks leading up to his visit, Mrs. DuBray read a number of Chin's books and helped students consider thoughtful questions to ask. Students loved his presentation, particularly the interactive drawing. Thank you to Mrs. DuBray for organizing this special event for our school community, and to the PTO for sponsoring it.

Vermont Arbor Day - May 6

We are the lucky recipients of a special tree that will be planted at FMS on Friday, May 6th at FMS. The Conservation and Trails Committee has arranged a tree planting, and our FMS Student Council is helping to advertise the event schoolwide. Each class will participate in the planting ceremony by spreading mulch at the planting site. We will share photos of this special event. For more information, visit the Vermont Urban & Community Forestry website.
