Panther Post
February 15 - 20, 2016 - Serve, Lead & Inspire
Hello Lopez Families,
I want to thank everyone for following the procedures out in the parent pick-up/drop-off lot. The process has improved from when I first arrived.
For the last couple of weeks, I've had a district safety specialist going through the procedure himself and he gave me his final report. After going over his findings to determine the need to make any large scale changes, we discussed possible options. I soon realized that most options come with increased security risks that would take more effort and personnel to work. The needs assessment proved to be beneficial to help us see if it's worth going further (which still might not be an option).
In the morning, the specialist found traffic did indeed stall around 7:35 and also at 8:09, but the average time to go through the whole pattern ranged from 4 to 6 minutes. Since he counted an average of 423 cars during the morning hour, the process seemed to not only be adequate, but also pretty good compared to other schools. The afternoon cycle had similar good news compared to others. By 3:42, the line is basically gone. That's not bad especially since 3:30 is the time students start showing up in that area. If you wait until then to pick your child up, there's not much of a wait, although traffic on the roads may be worse then.
One suggestion I had from another parent that I really liked was for us to get the word across to our students and teach them to walk up to the last empty spot instead of running to the car, causing the parent to put on the brakes and stop before they should. We are currently working on that teach piece.
The upcoming Great Amazing Race event (see below) needs your help to get going. It is sure to be a lot of fun and the money helps offset the costs of our student leadership initiatives. I know there are a lot of you wanting to do it but maybe just haven't gotten around to actually signing up yet (I'm guilty of that myself). This makes planning difficult, so if you are planning to attend, please go ahead and sign-up soon. Thank you for all of your support!

Ian's Cup Spring Soccer Clinic and Fundraiser
Calling all Soccer Players! Ian’s Foundation will be offering their annual spring soccer clinic for the San Antonio youth as one of their major fundraisers for the Ian's Cup scholarship fund (formerly known as The Fincke Cup). The clinic will be held on Sunday, February 28th at the Mays YMCA from 2-4 pm (with registration from 1:30-2:00). The cost of the clinic is $30 if pre-registered and $35 the day of the clinic. It will include a 2-hour clinic as well as a 2016 Ian's Cup t-shirt (pictured to the left and while supplies last).
The deadline for t-shirt pre-orders and pre-registration for the soccer clinic to ensure a 2016 Ian's Cup t-shirt is Monday, February 15th, but pre-registration for the clinic will remain open through Saturday, February 27th at 6PM. Trainers will include local high school coaches, club trainers and high school soccer players from Johnson and Reagan, as they must volunteer at one of the foundation's community service events to be eligible for a scholarship.
Please refer to the soccer clinic flyer for more information about this event, t-shirt sales, the Ian's Cup Match, and a fundraiser they are having at Beefy's Backyard on February 23rd - 24th. More information about the foundation, volunteer and sponsorship opportunities, as well as upcoming events can be found at www.IansCup.com.
