"Beef on a Budget" hosted by TJ's Country Store
As the holidays approach thoughts of what to serve are always coming to mind. Come learn about cuts of beef that are affordable for the holidays and beyond and how to prepare them for a great feast.
Extension Educator, Mercedes Moffett will talk about beef cuts and where they come from, food safety and handling as well as safe cooking temperatures. Be prepared to sample!
Thursday, November 9 from 1-3 pm.
Meet at the book store next to TJ's, 2751 Market St. Mahtowa.
$10 at the door, 18 and under are free. Admission includes hand-outs and a meat thermometer.

"Winter Sowing" topic for November Community Connect class
Join Master Gardener, Lyle Giersdorf for an in depth presentation on starting seeds outdoors in containers during the winter months.
Winter sowing is a simple method of starting seeds outdoors in winter for spring transplanting. The jug works like a mini greenhouse allowing Mother Nature to germinate the seeds when the conditions are just right. This method provides everything for the plant, with no need to harden off seedlings.

Carlton County Master Gardeners welcome 7 new members
The Carlton County Master Gardeners are proud to announce that Thomas Kermeen, Teresa Backus, John Delvas, Terence Koren, Tina Cross, Brenda Maida and Kelsey Wickstrom will be joining the group for the 2024 gardening season.
Talents they will bring to the group are beekeeping, landscape design, community and school garden experience, youth mentorship, hydroponic gardening, and senior living gardening.
A warm and sincere welcome to all of them!
Annual Pumpkin Grower Meetup (Virtual on Zoom)
The University of Minnesota Extension Food Systems Team will host their annual Pumpkin Grower Meetup on Tuesday, November 14th 1:00 - 3:00pm. The event is virtual this year. Charlie Rohwer, researcher at Southern Research and Outreach Center will present results of an ongoing experiment investigating 4 species of clover interseeded between pumpkin rows. Rod Elmstrand, of Rod's Berry Farm, will join us to share learnings over his career as a pumpkin grower. Ryan Pesch, University of Minnesota Extension agricultural business management educator will present on marketing and record keeping techniques. In addition, regional Extension educators, Natalie Hoidal, Marissa Schuh and Madeline Wimmer will be available to talk about weed management, marketing and soil health as it relates to pumpkin growing in the state. There will be some time to connect with other pumpkin growers around the state on grower-led topics in break-out rooms. 2023 Timber Management and Taxation School
The University of Minnesota Extension Timber Management and Taxation School is designed to provide tax professionals, foresters, logging contractors, landowners, agricultural lenders, and farm management instructors with up-to-date information on federal tax treatment of income and expenses associated with the sale of timber.
The event will include presentations by Tamara Cushing, a timber taxation specialist from the University of Florida and Mike Kilgore of the UMN Department of Forest Resources, and will offer a rare opportunity to update your timber taxation knowledge.
The unique aspect of this event is that it involves professional foresters, logging contractors, landowners, and tax professionals in the same workshop. To best serve each group's clientele, each should understand the respective role(s) each group serves. The session will include ample time for questions and answers.
The course offers three Federal Tax update hours of CPE credit for tax professionals. Professional foresters will also receive SAF and MN FSP CE credits.
The registration fee covers workshop materials, refreshments, snacks, and lunch.

Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Online
Beef Quality Assurance provides systematic information to U.S. beef producers and beef consumers of how common-sense husbandry techniques can be coupled with accepted scientific knowledge to raise cattle under optimal management and environmental conditions.
BQA guidelines are designed to make certain all beef consumers can take pride in what they purchase – and can trust and have confidence in the entire beef industry. Today, the stakes are even higher because the full beef supply chain is leveraging BQA to ensure our commitment to food safety, animal welfare and beef quality. Producers attending this free workshop will receive a three-year BQA certification.

4-H Annual Butter Braid Fundraiser is Here!
Carlton County 4-H is once again selling Butter Braids for their annual fundraiser. Funds raised will be used to support Carlton County 4-H! This fundraiser will provided income to the Carlton County Federation to be able to support youth attending State, Regional, and County events along with programming efforts for youth in Carlton County. Each pastry is $15. Last day to purchase is November 28th. Stop and talk to one of the local 4-H's or we have a form at the office for orders to be placed as well!
Office Closures
The Carlton County Extension office will be closed November 10, 23 & 24 in observation of Veterans Day and the Thanksgiving Holiday.
In 4-H all youth are welcome!
4-H is an out- of-school, hands-on learning program for anyone in Kindergarten through one year past high school(grade 13). You choose a project that's interesting to them and explore it with peers and caring adults. 4-H clubs are groups of youth who want to learn together and meet in every part of Minnesota.
What can I do in 4-H?
The sky's the limit! 4-H offers learning experiences in science, photography, agriculture, healthy living, civic engagement and much more. We have one-day events, year-long projects and everything in between. There are many ways to try 4-H.
