Highlighting Assistive Technology
East Islip 2012-2013
What Have We Accomplished?
Enhanced Academic Supports
The integration of the SOLO software (reading, writing and spelling supports) into the curriculum across the district has resulted in increased independence and achievement in our students with learning disabilities.
Improved Infrastructure
The use of the free Bookshare.org resource has provided access to thousands of digital textbooks and novels to eligible students, while virtually eliminating the need to purchase 'Books on CD".
Incorporated 21st Century Hardware
The use of iPads with our most disabled students has supported student engagement, learning and communication, while decreasing the need to purchase expensive ($8000) dedicated communication devices
Where Are We Going?
Expand Resources
Continue ongoing professional development to include web based supports for common core standards
Support Transition Outcomes
Facilitate the success of students with disabilities in post-secondary and career placements through everyday technologies
Build Academic Fluencies
Utilize programs such as FASTT Math and Read 180 to support student growth in math fact fluency and reading comprehension
