2023-2024 School Year - Free Meals for Minnesota Students Bill Passage
On Friday March 17th, 2023, Governor Walz signed a bill into law providing free school breakfast and lunch for Minnesota students beginning next school year.
Key points:
Specific details on the implementation of this new law are not yet available. The District will communicate the details to our families once we have clear direction from the State of Minnesota.
For this school year students who do not qualify for free/reduced meals will still be charged for all meals.
If your family already qualifies for free/reduced lunches, your students will continue to receive those meals for free. No action needs to be taken.
If a family did not turn in an Educational Benefits form (commonly referred to as a Free/Reduced Lunch form), one can be completed online at https://www.myschoolapps.com/Home/PickDistrict or a physical copy can be picked up at any of the school sites. We strongly urge you to complete this form.
The Educational Benefits form can still be filled out for the remainder for SY 22/23 and submitted for review by the CHPS Food Services Department, which will determine if your student(s) qualify for free/reduced meals.
Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT)
Did your child transfer to homeschooling or virtual school because of COVID? They may be eligible for P-EBT benefits!
Students may be eligible to receive a pre-loaded Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card that can be used to purchase groceries. You children may be eligible for Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) benefits if:
- Your child previously attended a school participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) at some point after the start of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, or the child enrolled in kindergarten as a virtual or homeschooled student in school year 2020-2021 or later, and
- Your child is not attending a National School Lunch Program (NSLP)-participating school due to concerns about COVID-19, and
- Your child would have been eligible for free or reduced-price meals at their NSLP school if not for their virtual or homeschool status.
