What is the largest number of colors required to color any map that keeps adjacent regions separate?

The largest number of colors required depends on the number of regions on the map. For example, the United States has 50 states so that could be 50 different colors.

5 Color Map

It is impossible to have a map with 5 different colors. One region will always be excluded from touching every single region that. For example, the colorful map, the pink region was excluded from region 5. All of our attempts to make all 5 regions adjacent to each other failed because it is impossible.
