Black History Month Film Screening: The Central Park Five
Tuesday, February 17th @ 6:00pm in S&T 102
Central Park Five (PBS), a new film/documentary from award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns, tells the story of the five Black and Latino teenagers from Harlem who were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in New York City’s Central Park in 1989. The film chronicles The Central Park Jogger case, for the first time from the perspective of these teenagers whose lives were upended by this miscarriage of justice. Free and Open to the Public. Snacks will be provided. Post-film discussion to follow with Professor Sonya Conner (WSU Sociology Department) and Michael Jerry (Community Activist).
University Keynote Series: Book Discussion of The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas
Thursday, February 19th @ 2:30-4:00pm in the Blue Lounge
Please join us for a book discussion of Anand Giridharadas's new book. Multiple copies are available in the library. The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas, traces a Muslim immigrant’s campaign to spare from Texas’s Death Row the white supremacist who tried to kill him. Refreshments will be served.
The True American is a rich, colorful, profoundly moving exploration of the American dream in its many dimensions. Ultimately it tells a story about our love-hate relationship with immigrants, about the encounter of Islam and the West, about how—or whether—we choose what we become.
Anand Giridharadas is an author and New York Times columnist. In 2011 he published India Calling: An Intimate Portrait of a Nation’s Remaking, about returning to the India his parents left.
