Flexible seating in the classroom
Mrs. Hildebrand's class
Background Information
I have been contemplating the idea of changing the seating in the classroom for a while. Last year, I had crates, stools, sitting pads, and benches for students to sit during our huddle time. This is where we would have our Read Aloud lesson and class discussions. As the year progressed, students asked if they could work in that area. As long as they were working, they were allowed to sit in that area. I have always been flexible with letting students stand while they worked.
This summer, I decided to plan for more options. I upscaled several tables and was granted funding for some materials. Our classroom looks very different than it did one year ago.
I have added links to some research that justifies my attempt to make a positive learning environment for our students.
It will probably continue to change as students make other seating options.
Kathy B.'s quote
What an incredible project! As a pediatric occupational therapist and a mom, I feel this project has great value to enriching the learning environment. All kids need and benefit from sensory experiences and movement...for so many reasons! You are an incredible gift to the kiddos in your classroom! I hope this idea provides inspiration to many other teachers as well!!
